He wasn't asking you to change your opinion. He was asking you to explain it. If you think his photo was bad, why not give him some insight as to why you thought that, so maybe he can make it better?

Too bad none were fast enough to quote the original response from our poet Lauriate: "Keep it up and you'll be facing a lawsuit."

I find it hard to imagine that this issue has escalated to a level of the kind of responses in the thread and the one's that have mysteriously disappeared, but I would challenge the one who seems to have plenty of words written all over his 'artistic' site to revisit the comment section of the voting for this challenge and specifically identify what about the picture led you to say it was 'Simply Bad.'

If you have an intent to be a writer or a photographer whether here or somewhere else, the first step is learning to communicate to the audience.

Anyways, enough of this ignorance. In my "opinion", I simply didnt like your photo. You photo was bad taste in my eyes. Simple, and done.

I am an Author by the way " Arcanist" but that is irrelevant in this site now isn't it? And I do have a good contract, so I'm guessing I have a good audience. And yes, I do live in Northern California. But again, that is still irrelevant. .. Now isn't it?

Well, happy new year to all, Rook included. :-D

Now do you understand why I told him not to write me back? He was being rude, and a poor sport.. He didnt ask for me to explain. He was hurt because I told my opinion..

Sounds like he's just looking for more detail; a bit of explanatioin. Nowhere does he suggest that his photo does not in fact suck, that your opinion is invalid, or that you should change your mind.

He just asks you to be more articulate, i.e., more clear and expressive.

From the Challenge Rules:

"Simply bad" is not construtive. It does not help the photographer improve. Tell him what you thought could be better, and then you're getting somewhere.

Ah, now...and thank you Michael.

I certainly did not infer you were a bad guy. I did however in bad taste, quote something you decided to retract and for that I apologize. It is regrettable that we all had to resort to the brutal beating we all had to give you to force the words out that meant something to us, but now we know what you felt and what you meant when you decided to comment on the pic and WHY you voted in such a way.

It is more regrettable that you feel so ganged up on now that you have chosen to hide your web address from others. I have read your poetry some of your prose and seen some pics that you have there. It is great that you have a contract and I wish you well in those endeavors.

In choosing to become a part of a community that in many ways lives on the premise that 'a picture is worth a thousand words,' a poetic comment (Simply Bad) or worse, no comment at all, will drive some people to the edge of sanity because they hunger for learning. I cannot learn from your opinion that it is simply bad. I can easily learn from your statement that you felt the pic was 'in bad taste.' That at least would give me a starting point to ask, "what about this image caused someone offense?"

I hope you will see the difference and give the site (and the community) a try, you seem to have an artistic flair that you have explored in writing and poetry, that *could* become a serious advantage if you are also someone who can grapple with the technical aspects of photography and be able to take both the good and bad in stride. It is not easy to be a member of a family of so many diverse thoughts and cultures, but it is far more rewarding than embracing darkness alone and not seeking out the way that light and dark play together.

No worries Arcanist. The photo you have on your profile rocks by the way.

I'll just elaborate more openly, and with more thought into them for fellow photographers in the future.

This is why we have anon voting now. Tough. Give me a crappy comment like that. I'll sure email ya. I actually did email someone on Deja Vu thanking them for the profoundly insightful comment they left. (it wasn't).

M

Same person gave me some really bad comments too. Email you about it.

I'm looking forward to checking out all of your luxurious photos in the future months to come.

I may even subscribe.. But I'll wait a two or three months to make up my mind on that decision.

Funny, I always thought that was West Hollywood, but I guess it depends on your personal context.

To me, it sounds like Rook's reply is not really asking for clarification or expansion of the original comment, but is more of a retort to that comment. Even the choice of the title for this thread is a contentious distortion of the commenters screen name and seems to imply that his original comment was made in anger, which I doubt.

Constructive comments are not yet a requirement, nor is writing an extensive thesis on how a particular photo could be improved. I cannot speak for the Poet, but I see no particular reason for him to expand on a comment like "Simply Bad". Perhaps that is the true essence of his opinion and he felt that the photo in question deserved nothing more.

Sometimes a simple, blunt expression is all a particular image inspires. Some images are so irretreivably poor that any comments on how they could be improved would involve writing an entire introductory text on photography.

Exchanges like this are a prime example of why I tend to limit myself to commenting on images that are only a bit off course, or those where I really cannot find fault. Sometimes it takes a great deal of self-censorship to refrain from making the "This just sucks." comment, but I manage.

Being a newbie,,,, I know that my photos "suck" but I would hope that you might consider giving me perhaps one or two pointers which would assist me in future endeavours.

Given enough time and comments, I might stand a chance of attaining an acceptable level.

Just a thought, but for me a negative constructive comment is better than no comment.

Even if its two or three years to make your decision that would be okay. You dont want to really jump into things. Take your time...no problem.

Poet, thank you for the reply, it seems that we are simply at odds here, I will not e-mail you again and I am sorry that you were forced revert to a 3rd grade comment; but, never the less, please accept my apology for coming at you sideways in this matter. I did read some of your poetry and found it quite nice and thanks you for the props in the new year. May you prosper in ΓΆ€™05 and best of luck with your new book.

Spaz, you know the further I get from the original conversation, I think you have a very valid point. It is true that e-mail does not carry vocal inflection very well, I did not mean my original response to be taken as it was, in anger. I simply have trouble with the "this bad" and "me not like" style of commentary, especially from any person that obviously takes the art of language seriously. That said, perhaps censoring myself in this matter and not commenting may have been much more prudent.

Have a good new year everyone, especially you, Mr. Distorted Poet.

Oh, Eric, thanks for the mooning.

Look, this type of comment is unhelpful and meanspirited. But your best strategy is to ignore it. People who make these types of comments are looking to get a rise out of you. Don't play into their misery!

Then why dredge up old Rant threads that have been dead for 2 weeks?
