When you transfer your photos on to your iPod with iTunes[or is it iPhoto?], does the program automatically resize the image to that of the resolution of the iPod screen?

I ask this because I've had the chance to play around with an iPod Photo and was INCREDIBLY impressed at the speed at which I can scroll through the photos. There is literally no loading time for each photo.

Then I was thinking..since you can view the photos on a tv from the iPod Photo...they'd have to be full size images. If so, WOW, does the iPod Photo use a fast processor to process all the images so quickly or something?

I don't know the answer to this (but I suspect you could find it by browsing the pdf spec sheet at apple.com), but I know that iPhoto produces a separate thumb for each image in your library. I'd guess that iPod Photo is making use of this thumb for purposes of screen display on the iPod rather than resizing on the fly. When you view on a TV, it's then using the full size image (again, guessing).

$500 and you still have to buy an accessory card reader to store photos. How weak.

Oh I know. I guess a built in card reader would take away from iPods aesthetic qualities?

However if they did release a new iPod Photo with a built-in CF reader...i think it would dominate the market

Um, no. You've missed the point. The iPod Photo is designed for displaying pictures, not reading media cards in the field. It automatically syncs to your iPhoto library over Firewire (fast), so you can take your pics on the road and display them wherever.

To answer the original question... strangeghost had it right. The iPod automatically saves thumbnail pics at a smaller resolution for rapid display.

I understand that but I feel the same as eswik, if they combined the functions it would rock. As it stands right now it feels like a hobbled product. An overpriced one at that.

Actually I feel the same way, but we're looking at it from the perspective of a photographer's needs. I'm sure Apple designed it for computer users who'd like to carry around images that have already been downloaded and processed.

Keep in mind also that it's fundamentally a music product, designed for audiofiles, and only hacked recently to add the photo touch. If Apple had designed a photo unit from the ground up, I'm sure it would rock the photo world the way the iPod has rocked the MP3 player world. iPod photo is a hack at this point. It'll display pics, but don't expect all the other stuff until Apple does it right.
