Timing is important......

While I am still a novice myself, maybe a couple of suggestions. First light always helps with action, the more of it the better. If you are doing alot of action shots, you don't necessarily need to use the IS of your lens (I think it has it). Use f4 and go for a high shutter around 1/500 or higher, bump your ISO if needed.

I also find it easier if the horse has a job. Whether running around or eating. However, they are curious little buggers and as soon as the see the camera they are curious. Either this curiousity manifests itself as them coming right up to your face or a little flighty. That usually clears it self up in an 30 minutes to an hour depending on the horse. Black horses are a bit tougher, at least for me since the rider is often offset with white that the dynamic range is so wide. Much akin to weddings I think...

But, I'm still learning myself. The picture you captured is terrific!
