I was just curious if anyone here has heard any news about a replacement for the Canon EOS-300D Rebel. This 300D has been around since August, 2003, to me it seems only logical to come out with a replacement soon. The 10D came out in Feb 2003 and about a year later (August 2004) the 20D was out, or there abouts ... so...

There are a couple of reasons I'm asking.
Mainly if a new one comes out, the 300D will come down in price and hopefully the replacement will be in the current price range of the 300D.
So I could get a better price for the 300D and or purchase the new one or keep saving ;-) Who know!?!

So, anyone with the inside scoop on this?

Thanks

I heard rumours of February. Probably be 8 MP with a little more functionality, like the firmware/flash issue.

My crystal ball is cloudy, but here is my SWAG:

A new rebel at 8Mp - using the 20D sensor. Some minor tweaks and a price of $999-$1099. (flash compensation, USB 2.0) More of a D70 competitor, something to make the masses move up but stil below the 20D.

I think the rebel as we know it will continue -(the 10D is still on the market I think) probably cheaper by $100 (like the after-rebate price) like maybe $699 body 799 lens/body? They are selling them by the thousands or more, a great way to get newbies to dSLR into the Canon fold and sell lenses and more bodies later. Too good a business plan not to continue it.

Probably will be offered in different kit configurations too, ie. more EF-S lenses to choose from now. They might even offer the USM version of the 18-55mm, just hope the optics are better on that than the original 18-55mm.

Don't know if it would make a huge amount of sense for Canon to make the new Rebel 8MP, surely that would really hurt 20D sales? I think it will be 6MP.

Ahh, but the Rebel was 6 as was the 10D. Same sensor.
And we are in a megapixel race.

I would think they will do one of two things, make it as fast as the 20D but keeping the 6 MP sensor, or giving it a 8 MP sensor and leave it at the same speed as the current Rebel. With the 20D selling for less then $1400, including the kit lens, they will have to keep the price pretty low or there would be little reason not to buy the 20D instead of the Rebel.

I read in a magazine that the 300d has a 'shelf life' of approx 18 months, so we will be nearing that window soon. I understand that they are planning to bring out a 300d mark 1 but what they will be including I dont know. Perhaps more pixels and the ability to adjust flash etc?

Have to say that I am more than happy with mine and I dont intend to upgrade to anything in for foreseable future. The manufacturers seem to be in a megapixel race now trying to get people to buy new kit just because its 8mp instead of 6.3mp, well I for one dont need 8mp. In fact I still use my original Fuji which has 2.3mp which can produce prints upto 16inch x 12 inch and they are fine.

The 300d with some decent glass in front of it can produce outstanding photographs. The standard kit lens takes pretty decent photos from f8 and above. I am looking at some Tokina Pro glass at the moment as I have found one which is selling for a really good price, just hope its still there at the end of this month when I get some money.

Buy the Camera that fits your needs today because there will ALWAYS be a new one coming in the future.
01/13/2005 08:52:00 AM · #10
I've been reading a bit and have as of yet not seen a since write up on the replacement, or any new release.

I'm presuming everyone here is going on presumption?!

I also agree doctornick that it's best to get a camera that fits your needs. But I'm a patient man and if I wait a month or two to save some cash on a product I will. From experience new product drive the previous ones price down and that's a plus no matter which way you look at it.

MikeOwens I've also seen that approx 18 month shelf life around and that's exactly why I posted this. It's now in that timeframe so I was hoping someone has heard some info on this.

Personally, 8MP is not really as important as low noise at high ISO to me (please send me a 20D ;-) someone anyone.

My Z3 does the job and I will be keeping that around as a backup.

Anyone else with any web links, news releases?

Thanks guys for the info so far.

why not try to buy a used rebel or 10d I am sure with the 20d and markii some folks have a rebel or 10d for sale, just a thought as a way to save a fair bit of money and not have to wait so long.

Digital Rebels are super cheap now...there are also a bunch of brand new ones floating around that are being sold at the price after the triple rebate. People are buying them to increase the rebate on their Canon lens purchases, then reselling them on ebay or fredmiranda.com.

I have never really been the type to buy used, but I might consider it.

But on Ebay I've seen some good deals on Brand New Canon 300D.

I'll probably wait a little longer to see if I find any more news on a replacement, as always I buy and the new one comes out the next day, that's my luck.

thatcloudthere I'll have to check out that fredmiranda.com you mentioned.
PS: Got my Manfrotto TriPod, MonoPod and Joystick Grip at a mom & pap photo store that's been in my area for 20+ years, and got awesome prices better then most stores and Vistek.ca and they had them in stock.. thanks for the advice.

Did go to TO. but never made it out anywhere, visiting family. Acutally it's a local store on the Mountain in Hamilton. Don't even know the name as I've only been there twice (just discovered it when I went walking with my son). They had it and offered it lower then the stick price which in total was lower then I've seen anywhere. Funny what you see/find when you actually look around ;-)

I should check them out...they carry lenses and everything?
01/13/2005 12:54:53 PM · #18
P.S. they stopped shipping/making the 10D the same day the 20D was announce... or roundabouts. I'd imagine the same fate would befall the beloved 300D.

And yea, there's always something perceivably better.

They had quite a few lenses but I don't think these guys really stock too much one of each if anything but I'm sure they can order anything in at a great price!?! I'll have to get the name of the place but it's on the corner of East 23rd and Concession Streen on the Mountain. But a good place downtown Hamilton is Bell Arte Camera, 905-545-8877,85 Ottawa Street North. They had quite a few instock lenses and used for say that I noticed (small place but very busy).

I'm sure if anything comes out it's going to take the stores a little while to clearout the stock, that's where I jump in ;-)

Oh yeah.

My BLACK 300D kit came with the 18-55mm USM lens, and the optics are better, although the first 300D died with a fallen focusing screen. Camera was exchanged and I now have a nice new one!! Not bad for just 7 days!!

Hope to upload some pics once the weather improves and I can find an interesting subject!!

Where did you get a black 300D?

The other question is whether they are going to convert to the D20 batterey size. One reason many folk didn't upgrade to the 20 was the thought of replacing all batteries and the grip

Battery size? The 20D and the 300D both take the 511a/511/512 batteries.. I've got a 511a and a 511 on my desk here, and they are pretty much identical..

But yes, the battery grip is different.. (Wish mine would arrive already...)

Cheers, Chris H.
