Two excellent, Audubon quality, shots. IMHO.

Great Hooters.. :-).

Both photos are nice, I like the first one as the owl stands out from the background more, whereas the second is starting to be lost in the tree.

For us folks who are not in the Northern hemisphere (no owls down here...), how large are these birds?

And, on the total trivia side, do you have any problems with the Rebel in the cold, appart from batteries not lasting as long as during warmer weather?

Cheers, Me.

I have never had a problem with the rebel or batteries in the cold. I was out for at least 3 hour is the cold on Sunday to get these pics and it was about -6C.

The Barred Owl is smaller about 20" tall and a light weight. The Great Grey is 27" tall and a very heavy weigh very heavy for an owl.

The Great Horned Owl is the most aggressive around about 22" tall and will even eat Barred owls. Nasty!

In this Pic you can see he has a squirrel.

Edit for Spelling

The Great Horned will even eat the larger Great Gray Owl if given a chance, (your lower owl). Great shots.

They are both great. I see a barred owl all the time at the local zoo, but he only as one eye. (Hense why the zoo got him). This spring/summer going to hire a local guide and explore the wilderness.

I would contact your local Birding group instead. Your probably get better results.

When I saw the heading I knew it would be owls. You didn't fool me. :) Owls are so cool, they're like the coolest bird there is. I've never seen one in the wild though. But I saw a couple this weekend at The Pelican Man's Bird Sanctuary here in Sarasota. Unfortunaltely I didn't get any pictures. If anyone ever gets to Sarasota you should check it out.

Great shots.

I am thinking of getting this lens but was also looking at the Sigma 80-400mm lens also. Did you ever check out the Sigma? (or anyone else for that matter). I am wondering if the Canon is really worth the extra money. After looking at your wonderful shots it sure seems to be worth the extra money. Any opinions would be welcome.

It may be suprising but I did not use the IS on these shots. I find if I use my tripod (Manfrotto and Ball Head) the IS hinders more then helps. For hand held shot the IS is amazing.

That's one of the most impressive pairs of hooters I've seen in quite some time.

Not surprising at all. The manual states (you DID read the manual, right?) that IS should never be used on a tripod as it works against itself in that situation.
