LOL it's not so much a question of need as much as a question of Want! :D

I figured, but is it because it's more portable?

It'd make a great computer for my kids, a wicked home theater player, and Airport allows me to be online anywhere in the house without a laptop.

It will fit in the glove box of your car with an a/c adapter. Use your imagination.

...and cheap. My kids/relatives typically get my hand-me-down computers with an old monitor. Now it makes more sense just to buy a new Mac.

I'm looking after three G4s, all running different versions of OS X (Panther). One of them is used by a technophobic abuser, another by two rambunctious kid-aliens from the dark side another one by myself.

I, myself, have the habit downloading several files at once while reading my mail, editing photos and movies, listening to some tunes, watching a streaming video and and burning a few thousand photos onto a DVD, all at the same time.

I'll be damned, if we could get any one of these Macs to crash.

So would I need to buy all new software if I switched over to the Mac side of the world?

I'd like to do more editing of video, music and of course photographs. Would now be a good time to jump?

Yes. Macs excel at video, music and all things graphic. The new version of iPhoto (to be released Jan 22nd and included on all new Macs) handles RAW files and adds image rotation, sharpening, white balance adjustment and all sorts of other goodies. Some companies will swap your Windows software for Mac versions at a nominal fee, but many require a new purchase.

Don't even talk to me about Apple stock. I had 1200 shares this time last year. :-(

Once you go Mac, you'll never go back.

Buy software? -Probably not. All Macs come with a plethora of installed software, with minor variation of selection depending on which models you choose. For the needs you describe (above), the iLife suite (iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes, iDVD -in higher-end mods.-, Garage Band etc.) should enable you to produce and enjoy broadcast quality video, music and import, edit, sort and store your photos quite neatly and elegantly.

iPhoto 5, especially, has a good selection of basic editing tools and is compatible with RAW files. You may want to add Photoshop to your arsenal, but you won't need to get all these little helper apps (EXIF data readers -iPhoto does this), drivers for peripherals (built into the OS), media players and so on.

Edit: no need to go on - scalvert beat me to it.

Everytime I go into an office for a design job I run Photoshop, Illustrator and maybe Quark or InDesign and every time they crash - no warning no pre save and no reason afterwards just crash. Also often have email and internet on too.

All with gigs of memory and one was even brand new G5 just for me to work on.

To be fair it's the software that crashes not the OS, but still doesn't happen on PC

Well, at least you won't have to do a whole restart as you would have to on a PC, but, yes, apps can crash. This should be a rare occurance though, and from the sounds of it, it is not.

Which OS are you running, what is your regular maintenance like? What is the size of you HD and how much space is left on it? Do you keep third-party free- and shareware apps on your machine(s) or do you run a relatively pristine system, which could cause some issues?

Could be a font problem, bad RAM or a configuration issue. I run all those apps without a hitch.

Sounds like my PC at work. I open excel and word, and get the "Daily Blue Screen of Death".

At least it's not spontaneously rebooting every 30 minutes like it did when it was new.

Been using Macs my whole professional life all different types, ages, software so really that is not much of an excuse, bad RAM etc.

Also the new one was quite literally out of the box and yet still crashed.

You wouldn't believe how much I want to like Macs but can't just just yet :D

Your experience, however, is an isolated one. I think it's worth investigating...

Just because it's new doesn't eliminate these as possible culprits. A few bad apples, you know... ;-)

I actually believe you must be a Mac jinx - these problems are so rare and I've been using them for well over 10 years. : )

Given the benefits of a supreme OS, ease of use and connectivity I think you are very much alone with this kind of consistent problem.
01/12/2005 01:44:10 PM · #50
One (possibly) enormous problem:

On Apple's website, I see only 2 USB 2.0 ports on this mini-mac. Yet, you must connect your keyboard and mouse by USB 2.0 ports. So, suddenly, you have no USB ports. Does anyone else see this as a major problem? What about my card reader or camera? That's a USB connection. Or tons of other things that connect by USB. Would I run into a problem with this?
