We're moving into a new office, where I'll have a 9x12' room dedicated to [mostly] product photography. This room has very tall ceilings, and the question came up of whether we could install some kind of lights (maybe a grid of these) and diffuser fabric to turn the ceiling into a huge softbox. Has anyone seen a similar setup, and is there any real benefit to this over a normal 30x60" softbox?

We tried something like that in our studio. Problem was, lighting was totally non-directional and non-adjustable. Classic siftbox alloaws you to have soft, directional light. Gives you subtle control over modeling/rendering of highlights.

Not with those particular lights, but I have seen setups with a grid of rails on the ceiling.

If the walls & ceiling are bright white, you can literally use the whole room as your softbox. Aim a strobe at a wall, ceiling, or corner to provide relatively diffuse but still somewhat directional light.
If you use something like the 550EX or 580EX, you can manually set the flash zoom to illuminate more or less of the "reflector" to control the softness of the light.

Thanks for the responses. I should mention that we've already got two AlienBees B800 strobes with umbrellas, and I'm pushing for a third strobe and a big softbox.
