Anyone have any suggestions on film for Moonlight photos? I read that ISO 50 Film is the best. I can only find that in Slide Film. Is it hard to make prints from slide film...and is it cost prohibited?
I have a Nikon N80 film camera...I have been expirementing with. You can achieve great color saturation with film.
Anyone try this with their digital? What setup did you use, i.e. ISO, Exposer.F-stop? |

If you are going to take moonlight photos make sure you have something like city lights also in the photo. We had a beautiful moonlit night once and I took a photo of it, using slide film, as normal it was a long time before I used up the roll and by the time I got the slides back I forgot about taking the photo. When I looked at the slide I could not understand why I took a photo of the sun over the field, a moonlight photo with no reference looks just like a sunlit photo. Where I took the photo there was no light other then the moonlight and to from the photo you could not tell it was moon light.
Where as you can make print from slides it is easier if you start with negatives. As for what film to use I am not sure what kind if best, but over all I really donĂ¢€™t like any film over 100 ASA (sorry 100 ISO), well for that matter I am fully digital and I donĂ¢€™t like any film at all, but to each his own.
Have you played with the D70 and moonlight?
In any event it will be a few days before you can try any good moonlight photos.

I played with the D-70 this week with star trails. I'll post one that I took. The exposure was about 15 minutes with ISO 200. This was on a new moon phase. So no moonlight at all.
Haven't had a clear moonlit night yet to play around with. |

If you can get a good photo with a 15 minute exposure then you should have no problem getting some really good moonlight photos. |

Well the picture wasn't what I expected...but it was a start. It's hard judging with the film camera since you have to shoot a roll before you can see what you got. |

I got some great moon shots but the file info is blank. With ISO 100 film I would try 1/2 minute at f8 then bracket three whole stops either way.
Anything much over a minute is going to be blurry as the moon is moving.

Well that was wrong. I do have the info on my Mac. 1/400 sec at f/9, ISO 250 for a full moon useing a 600mm lens and 1/500 sec at f/8, ISO 160 for a quarter moon using the same lens with a 2x extender.
The focal length of the lens will make a difference in exposure on a shot like this.
Also it is often better to shoot at early twilight if you can to get some color aroungd the subject, this is not always easy to do, but on a full moon night when the wind is comeing out of the north (in the northern hemisphere) the shot is very possible.

I was talking about taking landscape photos using moonlight. I think you are speaking about taking shots of the moon itself. |

This was ISO400 F/5.0 15 seconds with the 20D...
See the other comments with the image, and scott is right, if you don't have any other light in the photo you can't tell it's moonlight..
Cheers, Chris.

Did you change names because of the "Santa hat" picture?

Nah, the old username was my business name.. I've sold the business and domain name so a change of username on a few websites was in order as well.. I didn't mind the santa hat, it bought out my eye colour. :-).
