The first one is nice and the best IMHO. The second one seems a bit too far away for my taste. The last 3 are nice but they would be a lot nicer if you had some large diffusion to filter out the hotspots on the hair and body (EDIT) or use photoshop to darken those areas.

I was going for the backlight feel, do you think it doesn't work? the first is def my favorite, and it fits the format for the cover (masthead on top)

Well, maybe it's just me but I think the hair is too bright from the sun... Get someone elses oppinion in to make sure it's not just me saying this. |

I'm no expert but since you asked Eric...
No's 1 and 5 I find most appealing
No. 2...the pose is too stiff
No 3....The "top half" crop is not suited to landscape format
No 4....The background pulls my eye away from the model.
I think that the background is an issue on all except No. 1. The line through the neck on No. 5 rather catches the eye.
As I said... I'm no expert so I hope that a subjective crit helps here.

my preference 1, 5 , 3
#2 the background is too close to the subject and seems distracting and yes the subject is too distant
#4 Again the background interferes with subject
