Thinking outside the box is even more challenging with a set of rules to follow. That's what the challenges at DPC are all about, doing something different while still following some guidelines.
Sorry, I didn't see any comments I'd consider harsh posted to your photo. |

Yes, to me "mechanical" is not a candle. I based it on DPChallenges definition, and wanted to be unique. I was under the impression that a concept of any art is to think outside of the box and express the rules in a new way- in your own way. I'm having trouble understanding why so many of you found this unacceptable. Maybe it's because this was the first challenege I participated in? |
Outside the box? A horse does not rely on electronics (not electricity) either, but I fail to see how a horse would qualify under the theme Mechanics, unless it was pulling a planter or running a cane mill. It was outside the theme. |

I have not read the whole thread here, just the original post...
I'm new at DPChallenge as well and it is a bit tough to follow a Challenge... I think that's why they call them a "Challenge"
Anyway, take it as a learning experience and move on to the next challenge! You met the challenge in your mind... don't worry if others have a different opinion, just worry about the actual photograph that was taken and concentrate on the comments that could help you improve your style of photography!
Good Luck on future Challenges!

Perception is everything.
Writer seems to have percieved that the details of the challenge were a definition provided by DPC to frame the word Mechanical. An easy to miss three letter word AND can quickly throw a wrench into things and land you in the fire.
A lot of us want to be really artistic with our photography, get across a message, or simply show that we have what it takes to get up there in the scores. Many of us here are simply trying to get technically better at taking pictures that our families would WANT to sit through a slide-show or two of only because we then take such interesting and emotive shots.
DPC is not an art factory, no matter what anyone tries to tell you. You are given a challenge: FIND SUBJECT. - Communicate that subject with your camera to a very wide audience in a given period of time. What comes after is what you put into it. Will it be art for art's sake? Will it be art that actually communicate's the challenge or will it simply be that you will find a snapshot of something that fits like a scavenger hunt trophy and plop it up on the web?
Some scavenger hunt trophy's are really cool and unique and everyone says to themself "Where did you go to find THAT?!", others can be found at any nickel and dime, new, used, battered or lovingly taken care of. It doesn't make them worth less, but when the scavenger hunt is over who's trophy will they remember, the common one, the one that didn't quite fit or the one that was a perfect fit and had the wow-factor?

Without electricity a horse wouldn't be able to move, eat, poop, or anthing else. You're right though it wouldn't meet the challenge. |

Now, now, you're getting biological on us and we're trying to be mechanical.

What a great metaphor.

Rule #1 of DPC challenges: Keep it obvious.
Definition of mechanical [məkænɪkəl]
A adjective
1 mechanical
using (or as if using) mechanisms or tools or devices; "a mechanical process"; "his smile was very mechanical"; "a mechanical toy"
2 mechanical, mechanically_skillful
relating to or concerned with machinery or tools; "mechanical arts"; "mechanical design"; "mechanical skills"
3 mechanical
relating to or governed by or in accordance with mechanics; "a belief that the universe is a mechanical contrivance"; "the mechanical pressure of a strong wind"
4 mechanical, mechanistic
lacking thought or feeling
The last one is one take I don't recall seeing...
Welcome to DPC! It is an interesting place, and makes one think and learn more than just art photography. Look at the scores of most of the past cahllenge winners - there are many 1,2 and 3 votes. Not everyone agrees with what is 'art' let alone what fits a challenge.
