I'm thinking of making a Sarasota calendar for next year, and this is the first shot I'm thinking of including. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions you may have.
Thank you,
Mark

I think it's a good shot. Given the amount of great sunsets there, I'd say the sunset itself isn't too spectacular but the fisherman is a good addition to the foreground for some interest. I'd keep shooting anyway because you're bound to nail some other great sunsets.
Are you going to do any nature shots from Myakka? Has it recovered from the flood? My mother used to live right near the park, and moved to KY a couple months before the flood and we were told her former house was completely underwater.
( accidentally posted this directly to the photo too ) |

Thanks Robert. Yeah, I know there's no lack of opportunity for great sunsets here, and I do have some other nice ones.
I did go to Myakka State Park one day a few months ago and it was completely under water. Well, not completely, but you could not walk on the trails, only the roads were passable. My Wildlife and Parts entries were taken there. I took a lot of shots while I was there, but it was shortly after I had bought my camera, and I still did not know what I was doing. Maybe I'll post some anyway so you could see the flood.
I'm not sure if it has recovered yet, but I was thinking of going back soon, because it is a great place for photo ops. And the weather here has been spectacular lately.

I think all you need is to set a bunch of days under it to make it a calendar. The sunset to me sets the fishermans mentality of the last cast for the day. It also gives a nice peaceful feel to the photo.

Are you making the calandar yourself or having it printed commercially? Reason I ask is that every one I've ever seen uses a square or nearly square crop to all the photos.
Good luck with the rest of your shots. |

Yeah, I thought about the fact that this is a rectangular photo too. I'm not sure yet how I will get it printed. What inspired me to do it, was that a local big chain bookstore here was selling Sarasota calendars, and they were horrible. Poor quality printed, uninspired photos. I thought, "Man, I've only had my camera for a few months, but I'm sure I could do better than that." And this calendar made it into a large national bookstore! This photo is much better than anything that was in that calendar. They even had a baseball stadium in it that wasn't even in Sarasota. Unless it was years ago.
Anyway, here are a couple of the Myakka photos so you can see the flood.
Thank you for your comment too Puma. I agree, the fisherman makes the picture. Without him it's just a so so photo.
