Anyone have experiance with these new gadgets? These are different from X drive coz it does not have a built in card reader. And cheaper too ;)

What makes me wonder why they are so cheap is that they both say either "enclosure" or "casing." So you still need to get tthe acrual hard drive to go IN it.?????

Neither of these contains an actual hard drive. They just give you the casing and the peripherals; you add your own hard drive. A good deal if you have a spare hard drive sitting around from an upgrade.

An external hard drive is a great storage tool, for sure; but it's subject to all the pitfalls of any hard drive; read "potential HD failure = loss of all images", so it won't substitute for other methods of portable archiving.

Yeah, but you can shoot a lot more with one of those babies in your camera bag. They are excellent for those of us who go on trips and don't have a laptop to drag along.

I do agree that they shouldn't be used for archiving for long periods. I tansfer the images to my hard drives on my PC and make a DVD data backup as soon as possible just to be on the safe side.

Oh, absolutely... That was just a "warning" to people who might think of them as a viable alternative for backing-up and storing images.
