hey all,

my new computer doesnt seem to want to let me transfer pics from my cam. i've tried my old canon sd110 and the pentax ist ds.

it doesnt launch software and doesnt appear in removable disks. however, the ist ds shows 'pc' on the readout when connected which suggests the usb port is active?

ahhh! help! is there a setting to activate the usb ports or what? im used to win 98 which seemed to work fine...

The camera drivers may not be installed properly. Try installing them again.

Thing with XP is.. it shouldn't *need* camera drivers.. especially for a newer camera like the Pentax *ist Ds..

I think what may be happening is a conflict between both cameras.

saint.. you might try fully uninstalling any and all drivers and software for both cameras, and then try just hooking the Pentax up (after reboot), and seeing if XP will recognize it then.

What opperating system is your new computer running? Win 2000, Win XP?

According to the internet your SD110 should work OK with both of those.

Have a look in the menu settings, can you change the mode for the USB connection in the camera? Some cameras allow the USB connection different settings so the camera can be used as a web cam.

If its set to the wrong mode it won't appear as a storage device to allow the transfer of pics.

Use a card reader - its easier, they are cheap as well

I used to use the cable connection with my Canon S50, but as soon as I bought the 10D I swapped over to using a reader. That way the computer doesn't get confused about which camer I'm connecting.

The reader allows me to use windows explorer to move the images to hard drive, where I can view them using fileviewer or zoombrowser or whatever. This also saves on the camera battery recharge cycles.

Hope that helps

Do you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 on your PC? If not you may need to update the PC. Microsoft's support site has alot of articles with digital cameras.

Also, try to uninstall and reinstall your drivers. Remember to reboot the PC after you uninstall the drivers. It will remove any registry entries that are still hanging around

goto the canon websie and download the proper driver for your camera. Chances are when you bought your camera it it wasn't ready for xp.

Do you have a 2.0 USB port. The old camera may us a 1.1 USB so it worked, but the new ist may us a 2.0. This may cause conflict

i have found that if i botch an install with a USB device, switching the device to another USB port on my computer will usually do the trick.

I have found that using a card reader, the dialogue box for selecting my software option (in my case Zoom Ex Browser on XP), works the first four or five times after a reboot. Afterwords it brings up a window with a folder called DCIM, which in essense are the files on the CF card. It's not a major problem, I just close the window and go to the Zoom Ex icon. Anytime I reboot it goes back to normal. Same thing on my last computer. Anyone experience the same with XP/Zoom Ex combination? Anyone know why this conflict arises?

I have seen several computers that act this way when connecting to USB on front of machine. If that's what you are doing, try a port on the backside of the computer.

A couple questions for you before you try anything drastic, like installing OS-X (yeah right!!!!!).

1) Have you tried plugging some other USB device into any of your USB ports with success? (Favorite devices for this test would be any optical mouse as they will generally be recognized and operable without need for extra software drivers, for basic functions on the mouse.)
Quick and dirty way to tell if your USB ports are properly working. I assume you're not too familiar with the way XP works. You can go into the device manager and see if all your devices are in good working order. The fact that both cameras do not work lead me to believe the problem lies in the ports. You may see a yellow (!) mark by problematic devices. Signs that everything is fine also include plug-n-play recognizing the USB device and kicking in to install drivers.

If all the ports are in good working order....

2) Did you install the camera software that came with both cameras? Before plugging in the cameras into the port? There are several ways to install drivers into XP. You can usually preload drivers before connecting the devices, you can connect the devices and follow the prompts for inserting CD's etc as plug-n-pray detects your cameras, or you can use the device manager, in order of decreasing preference.

Also, are you using a stable, virus/spyware-free, security/service pack updated xp platform? Good luck.

Have you tried using the Add Hardware wizard found in Control Panel? Sometimes works to install the things that are supposed to be automatically compatable but that Windows misses.
