Hey guys, took this last night. I like the pic, i don't know, the skin tone seems to not work. Or does it?

And if it's not that, what is it? Something seems to be off from what I see in making this a really good picture.

I don't know about the skin tone, what is her skin tone trough your eyes?

Did you take this portrait from a very close distance with a wide-angle lens (like 17 to 30mm)? It could cause a to wide face, wider than your eyes see it in real life. The most natural looking portraits are taken with a 50mm lens on a 35mm film camera. That would be something like a 35mm lens on the 20D taking the 1.6x crop into consideration. Telephotos also look more natural (like a 50-150 lens and more).

This was taken by a 50mm from about a yard and a half away.

And about the skin tone. Now that I think about it, there seems to be too much warmth in her skin in this picture. I was looking through other pictures of her which I would consider better pictures, and her skin was very natural.

I'll play around some more I guess.

Hi-ho,

Looks like maybe you had mixed light sources? Natural light and a bit of incandescent overhead?

The skin colour looks a little red/yellow to me, although not seeing the child I can't really say....

Skamal,

Very nice pic, with a strong color shift. Is this closer to "reality"?



Just went into hue/saturation, yellow range, desaturated a bit and shifted hue over to the left a bit. Then went into red range and bumped the saturation up a hair.

When I have shots that the lighting is bad, I just make it a B&W. The easy way works for me. I tried it out with your shot...it looks cute and you can brighten up her skin tone.
