When it gets close to time when a challenge ends scores drop a bunch, what people get pissed about there score? And try to take it out on others?
I rate on what I see and feel on a photo, not what someone has seen on mine. Some people need to look and learn. Just like what I am trying to. Don't take it out on others!
I have seen many threads about this....WHY can't we score better to make everyone to feel like, they have something great rather than some crappy score.
"I guess the older you get, you feel you have to get closer to people, for one day they will not be there"
You young people will learn this one day.

Why would you want to make people's scores higher if they didn't deserve it? If it's a crappy picture chances are it will get a crappy score and that's the way it should be.

A lot of folks, me included, "park" images in one or two scores at the outset of the challenge. This tkaes them out of random sorting and helps organize fine-tuning of votes and comments. I use 4 and 7, some I have heard use 5 and 7. I make a quick passthrough of ALL the images and sort them into 4 and 7 blocks the first night the challenge is up. The 7's may go as low as 6, or raely 5, when i go back and finetune, and may go as high as 10. The 4's may go up to 5 and, rarely, 6, or as low as 2. I almost never give a 1.
So near the end of the challenge, there may be a lot of people sorting out the final votes, and they will run up and down. You're happy when they go up, you notice it when they go down, and it seems like you get more downs than ups 'cuz they hurt more?
I donno. Might just be a bunch of casual voters blitzing through and voting off the cuff too. I think it all averages out.

As a youngish person, I already know that if I want people to be all gushy about my photos, and especially falsely gushy, I should show them to my family or my friends. If I want a real opinion, warm fuzzy or not, I will enter it into a contest where I am judged and pitted against others.
I also don't feel that lying about my opinion would help me to get close to others, especially on the Internet. |

I don't understand what you're asking. Do I see what who sees?

Are you saying because I can't break 6 it's because I'm below avg?
Are you implying that every person voting is doing so honestly?
I agree with spurs. I'm sick of pouring my heart into a grinder which is what I do every time I enter.
I NEVER vote on the challenges I enter. I think it's really odd that we are allowed to. This is the only site I've been to (which is admittedly not that many) that does so. I think it's impossible to get an unbiased judgement when the contestants are the judges. Everyone naturally (admitted or not) thinks their works is great, or they wouldn't think it's 'winning quality'. I highly doubt that people enter to get beaten.
It will never be fair until the contestants are just that.
Here come the brows!

I agree with your premise, but would like to point out that low-balling is not just a game for the young. There are plenty of old curmudgeons on this site who are very set in their ways and give low scores to anything that doesn't meet their idea of a quality photo.
We should not give excellent scores to crappy photos. But the fact is, there are a lot of excellent photos getting crappy scores.
And now scores of 1 2 or 3 (which should be reserved for terrible photos) are being given to average photos. |

By putting their image up on DPC for voting they aren't asking me to see what they see, though they are, of course, hopeful that I will. They are (presumably) interested in finding out what I and others see in their image and possibly also interesting in learning from it, should they wish to.
And some will learn what to change and improve in order to create images popular with the masses and others will learn the confidence not to crave the popular adoration of the masses and to go their own way.
Either way, no one will be helped if we all give 10s to everything because we're trying to be nice.
There's a difference between being cruel and being honest and if people don't want honesty they shouldn't enter challenges here.

Kavey makes a great point. Ultimately, participating in DPC challenges requires an open mind and a thick skin. Ultimately, we do what we do because we enjoy it. If we're seeking a change, constructive criticism will help us change. If we disagree with the criticism, we continue doing what we enjoy doing. |
