I'll post a review of it I posted elsewhere...
Seven Reasons Why Not to See 'White Noise'
Ahhh white noise, the name given to the high pitched, almost inaudble sound used every day in alarm systems around the globe to disable intruders with a burst of sound which renders them immobile and nauseous.
In case you don't know, White Noise is the Winter paranormal horror film starring Michael Keaton released last week, about a man who searches for his dead wife using Electronic Voice phneomeno, the recording of ghostly voices using tv equipment..
Seeing this last night it struck me as an alright ghost film, but by the end it was pathetic. Here's why...
1 - The characters are useless
Besides the main character Jon, and his blonde friend, every other character only appears for around 2 minutes of screen time each. Despite this, these small time charcters are all crucial roles., his ex wife, his wife, a psychic, a police officer, an EVP guy, a bad guy etc... all crucial characters are limited to such a short space of film that you barely remember them when they're offscreen.
All this leads to a very boring climax, often with the viewer thinking 'oh yeah, thats that guy' or w'whos that again?'. Not the best way to make a film.
2 - The story seems to have no structure.
See at first, Jon is happy, then Jon is sad, then he is a detective searching for his wife, then he is an EVP master, then he is a psychic, then a superhero, then a savior. He never really knows what he's doing, and while Michael Keatons acting is the best thing in the film, he never really has a purpose.
Also degrading for the film is the fact that often characters have the old 'kop out' routine of stating the complete obvious in case a dumbed down audience missed exactly what was going on.
3 - The director goes for the cheap scares.
You know how it goes, fade in the string section then BANG!! and everybody jumps. Yay. Scary. A fter 2 times it becomes very predictable and despite one pretty good jumpy moment, he goes for the cheap ones too often, ie, a truck suddenly going past witha screech, enhanced volume on screaming, random fast cuts to nothing. All very predictable.
4 - The director rips off other films in a shameless manner.
Mostly David Lynch films. Every time lights flicker in Lynch films something bad happens, it suggests an evil presence. However, Lynch films are dark and surreal, and in a film based on realism this kind of strange occurence doesn't fit well. Add to that the hell ghosts from Ghost, and some other horror cliches, you have one un imaginative director.
5 - The characters are often dumb.
Not so much the main character, but most others are pretty stupid. Actually scratch that, the fact that the audience clearly sees these three mysterious figures in all of Jon's recordings obviously means nothing to Jon, as he only notices them late on in the film.
6 - The realism goes out the window early on, and is shat all over by the end.
EVP is a phenomena I believe in, however, the spirit of EVP is in crackly recordings of wavelengths that perhaps contain messages from ghosts.
Your dead wife calling you from her cellphone is not EVP, it's pure Hllywood crap. Oh, and look out for the BANG.
7. The endng is appauling.
I don't want to spoil it for you, the film does that enough already, so highlight this to read it.
!!!!!!!!!!!SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Basically, I won't go into detail, but what was a supernatural thriller becomes Van Helsing for the last moment as some scary ghosts come and... break all of Jon's bones. Which is odd really because that is the most un ghost-like thing to do. Ghosts make things happen to people, they don't do, and CAN'T do such a brutal physical act, as they are not physical themselves. Pure silliness.
And that's that. Go see it if you wish, but don't expect much. Except the fact that Keaton is back, there's nothing too great in this movie, nor is there anything to make you want to see it again. |

Well, as you can see I thought it was pretty crap. Especially the ending. Did the characters not bother you? What was the point in his ex wife? Why did what happened to Jon happen? Why was the person with the least screen time/lines and importance the main bad guy in the movie?
It was terribly average.

| you're right, the guy that killed his wife needed to be in the movie more and I have no idea why they put his ex in as much as the did. I just think horror movies in general are pretty pathetic right now and it was good to see one that was different from the rest. I honestly liked it. |

Smoke a couple in the parking lot before you go into the theater and I'll bet it gets a lot better. |

I saw it last Tuesday at a preview showing, and was not too impressed. At the time I gave it a 6 out of 10. However the more I have thought about it the better it gets. I would now rate it a 7-7.5. I really liked the âdarkâ tonality of the movie (both visually & in its mood). It have a David Fincher type darkness to it.
****Spoilers****
Also you got to love it when a movie doesnât have the typical feel good everyone is safe & happy Hollywood ending.

I don't like Hollywood endings, this kind of wasn't one but it still was totally unreslistic compared to the realism in the film.
