I took the plunge today and invested in a rather sexy looking G5 iMAC and have made the swap from Windows to MAC.. I hope I made the right choice but for now I feel like a kid with a new toy and no instructions, trying to feel my way around it just now but this site looks different on a MAC monitor.. I just got PS/CS too so I will instal it very soon.

I got the iMAC with the 17" wide screen all in one jobby with a 1.8ghz CPU and 1GB RAM the manual is in Japanese but it offered me the option to run an english OS (first thing i was very impressed with). any pointers at this time would be wonderfull please MAC gods help a noobie out please

Thank you

I can only say YOU WILL LOVE IT!
General advice is hard, but if you have specific questions I would be happpy to help.
I am jealous that you have the g5. Welcome to the non-virus, non-crashing computer world. : )
the general tips I can give is that macs don't work like pc's, they are very intuitive. If you get stuck dont try a pc fix

Wooo hooo! You'll loveeee it! No more viruses or trojans!

Congrats on the upgrade. It may take you alittle while to adjust, but you'll love it. As ellamay suggested, don't look for a complicated answer if you get stuck on a Mac, the solution is usually quite intuitive. One DPC-related tip... Macs have a design and publishing heritage, so some defaults are geared more toward print than web. Remember to change your print preview to Monitor RGB in Photoshop before you do any challenge editing work for a better color match. Have fun!

You will find how great alot of the Apple programs integrate together. First thing I did when I got my G5 a year ago (been using Apple since 1982, though)...set up Mail, Addresses, iChat, iTunes and Safari.
Your System Preferences are where you may want to concentrate some time and go through them to see what they do (and make some changes of course). This is what I do with new programs...hit the Preferences, then play with the program.
Two of the great and useful (but often times ANNOYING-you'll see why when using PS) System Prefs is Expose and Dock. I keep my DOck at thebottom and it hides, without the magnification thing (drives me crazy)
//MacUpdate.com and //Versiontracker.com are awesome sites to check for new software also. Look for TinkerTool. Great System Pref that opens more functionality of MacOS.

Have Fun!!

youll dig it for sure. I just got a brand new powerbook and am loving it. Still have my pc for storing junk and what not, but slowly will move everything to the mac/ and cd's/dvds. I've used macs at work and our home for awhile so I knew it was the way to go. You definitely won't be dissapointed.

Congrats on the Mac Purchase!! Hope you got the AppleCare. Believe me it's worth it. I have a Powerbook 17" and the airport extreme only works when I'm within 5 feet of my access point. Went to the Apple Store and they said that they would need to check the Logic board and the antennas to see what the problem was. Needless to say this would cost more than the Applecare, I received an estimate of about $450.00 to get this fixed

I refuse to pay that. So unfortunately I'm limited to a 5 ft. radius to my router. AHH!!!!!!

BTW - Macs are so much more user friendly than PC's. OS X Rocks!!

krazyivan-You should be able to go buy a (DLink) wireless router for about $30-80 instead. With the Airport card in your laptop, should still link up. I use a USB solution around the house for the laptop, but rare, that is why I didn't go for the AirPort.

welcome to the world of Mac. One thing to keep in mind is the required (and easy) maintenance of the OS. Running cron scripts and regularly repairing permissions will serve you and your computer well.

Cron scripts are run automatically at around 3am, but only if your computer is on and not sleeping. You can repair permissions by using the Disk Utility found in the Utilities folder.

Or there are applications that will do it for you on your own schedule. Onyx for example is a tool I use, MacJanitor is another, and both are free. Cocktail is yet another, but costs $15.

enjoy!

I don't have a problem with the connection, I have a problem with the distance. This seems to be a big issue with the 17" Powerbook, I've seen a lot of complaints on Apple's forums. Unfortunately the airport card on the 17" Powerbook is embedded on the Logic board, so I can't even swap it out or take it out to use something else.

If anyone has any solutions, please advise!

Finally! Now I'll be able to steal software from you that actually works on my Mac. ;-)

Seriously, just let me know if you have any problems or questions. It's pretty easy and you shouldn't have any big issues, but feel free to give me a shout whenever you do. Just remember not to right-click on anything and don't worry about the lack of viruses.

Congrats Spike. Prepare for an experience you've probably never had. You're going to LOVE that machine.

Thanx to everyone for their input... No viruses yet to date hahahaha I kind of miss them really they were like old friends. Right click is available by using CONTROL click, as taught to me by my 15 year old son who then followed it up by saying I WAS WONDERING WHEN YOU WAS GONNA SEE THE LIGHT AND GET YOURSELF OUT OF THE DARK AGE... cheek! and to think I taught him all I knew.

I installed PS/CS last night and had a play and the first thing i noticed was that all the natural settings i used to use on windows were no longer relevent.. my USM settings of 250/0.7/0 for the first wipe of USM now make the picture look over sharpened, maybe that is why my pictures always score low (no spike...its the photographer not the computer).

Phill - I'll give you my instal disk LOL.

Having trouble finding the COPY/PASTE controls, but Im very impressed with what I have seen so far Photoshop seems to have a bit more power and I am practicing... hence why I never entered Bokeh challenge cos I need to get used to the new MAC... So now I have a good camera, good Computer, so if i still manage to get 4.5 average I`ll know that its just me...

Any guidence and suggestions greatfully recieved tips etc...

Also thanx to all who already offered some great advice Im a bit slow off the mark

Just use that Apple key like you would normally use the Control key on a PC. Copy is Apple-C (also called Command-C) and paste is Apple-V. They're also under the Edit menu if you want to copy and paste with the mouse.

Most newer IBM type USB mouses will work with your G5. Then right back to right clicking.

Your gonna love this. I bought a G5 last year then tweaked it a bit. It came dual 2Ghz with a 160Gb 7500rpm serial HD and half a gig of ram. I installed a 20Gb 10,000rpm Raptor, switched the OS over on to it (it is sooooo easy on a Mac), used the 160 for my images and added another 3 gigs of ram.

This isn't always as fun as a PC. I mean half the fun of having a computer was finding out what was wrong with it and fixing it. Well I guess now I will just have to spend my extra time taking or working on my pictures. If I get too bored I can alway visit any of my friends and work on thier computers. I'm always welcome.

PS (Ram is cheap for the G5. If you ever need more don't get it from Apple. It takes regular PC3200 400MHz DDR SD-Ram, non ECC, non registered. The cheap stuff(relatively speaking). Make sure it matches what you have is all. Not the same brand, but the same speed.
