Earlier today, I heard that former New Brunswick premier Louis J. Robichaud passed away from cancer.

Mr. Robichaud was elected in 1960 and ushered sweeping social changes to the province that bettered the lives of all New Brunswickers. Before he came to power, some regions of the province were poor, dirt poor. In Kent county, where my mother was born and raised, the illiteracy rate before he came to power was over 80%. Kent county was also one of the poorest counties in all of Canada.

My brother Jacko and I also owe Mr. Robichaud a debt of gratitude for having been able to obtain our combined four university degrees in French from Université de Moncton, which he helped found as well.

Many French-speaking Acadians like myself owe Mr. Robichaud a debt of gratitude for all the opportunities he created.

Anyhow, just thought I`d share.
