yet you entered the master's free study?

not to pick - just pointing out - that's no different than a non-ribbon winners challenge, and also giving a group special treatment.

there is generally no way to please everyone.

One easy solution then, it seems, is to simply not read any comments until the challenge is over. Then, whether a particular user chooses to be "hidden" or not, or change their comment (which seems unlikely to me), is not an issue, since once voting is completed, all identities are revealed...

But, just so I understand what you are suggesting:

You would like a third checkbox in the user preferences that says:

[_] Hide comments from temporarily hidden commenters until voting has ended

(doesn't have to be exactly those words, but that is the general idea, right?)

So the front page would show "Comments: 3", but when you clicked to read them, and assuming you had the above option enabled, and assuming one of the comments was from me (since I have the "hide during voting" option enabled), you would only see 2 comments, with perhaps some indication that there was another comment that was "hidden"?

If that is what you want, I will certainly add your suggestion to "the list" for implementation consideration by D&L.

Eddie: There are decisions that favor one group over another. In a site like this there are many threads which reflect this feeling.

Mine is not a request to change what the site decided to do. I am merely addressing an implementation that gives one group an edge. It appears that my argument is very weak because I am the only one expounding it. Consequently, I acknowledge this and please do not place my request for consideration. It is just that I wanted to make the point and then I felt like an idiot because no one can see the argument of the inequity. What this means to me, is that although my argument may have merit, it lacks general support because the point I am bringing up is not at all of any intrinsic value.

Believe me, I can live with this and things as they are. I was just surprised that I failed to express my feelings. Graphicfunk closes like a cheap camera. ROFL.

Yes, I did. But the masters was not a handicap challenge. I agree, it did give one group an extra edge. Often, I can live by simply acknowledging the truth. Now, to say that the masters was really not an extra edge is to be dishonest. So yes, it is hard to please everybody. There are times when decisions favor one group over another. The object should be to have as few as possible.

Hey Dan - I understand and agree with your point; that there is one minor preference that isn't addressed - or rather a preference that is no longer addressed.

In the old days those who did not want to see anonymous comments were happy since no anonymous comments could be made.

Now there is a mechanism to obtain a limited time anonymity, but there is no mechanism to not see the anonymous comments, like it used to be in the old days.

Like I stated in the beginning of the thread, Dan, I completely understand your request and think it is valid. Would I use it if it was implemented? I don't know, but it would be nice to have the option should someone start abusing the system. Just like I don't use the "baggies" option now, but it is available, should I want to.

It's a fairly logical request. Some people what to be anonymous while commenting during the voting period. Dan's suggestion will just take it one step further and allow the photographer the option to ignore those comments until they are no longer anonymous.

Until someone starts leaving me nasty comments, I don't care if a change is made or not. I just think it is a valid request.

Not sure if this suggestion has been made, since I skipped to the end of the thread halfway thru the 2nd page of posts. My apologies if I repeat someone else's idea.

I would make a couple of suggestions:

1) Don't allow comments to be deleted, only added to. Then, the community at large would learn who is abusing the system.
2) How about not displaying comments at all until the voting is over? Then, if somebody wants to retract a comment, it becomes a "no harm, no foul" situation.

And one related suggestion:

I'd like to see the names of the people who vote an image either a 1 or 2 on the low end, as well as voting 9 or 10 on the high end. I get the feeling there are people giving everyone a 1, regardless of the picture. On the other end, my first (so far, only) entry got two 9s and a 10 - it definitely doesn't merit those scores, but I'd like to thank the voters. :-)
