I love shutterstock and more importantly, i love having one of the top dl photos there :)

I think this signing under other people is a bad idea, rather than worrying about who to sign under just use this link :)

You need to sell a thousand images just to get $200? That is dire.

If I sell a single image (rights managed) I get $471

Sounds like a bad deal. Why not stick them on your own site, even if you get one sale per year it would still be better.

Truthfully, I may as well stick some up there. I have hundreds of decent, but personally uninspiring shots languishing on my HDs so at least they can perform a function and make a small amount of money in the process.

I've made 30$ so far and I don't care how long it takes.

Do you sell to a library, or directly to the end user? And where?

I don't really make any effort to sell my images to be honest. I have a few that are on my website which is just there more as a display of what I can do rather than actually to sell.

However, every so often I get people phoning me asking if they can buy the image to use for publications, and that's when I sell them.

I usually give them a price structure to choose from, depending on what they want to use it in.

Sometimes the client wants to buy the whole image rights and all, which is my favorite as I can then charge a lot more.

Mostly, for one time usage I charge around £200-300 and for full rights ownership I judge it on the quality of photograph and it's resell value.

Obviously I am not selling these several times a day, but I think in the last year i have made about £1500 from those photographs alone, plus quite a few shoots have come my way after people have seen the portfolio.

It's more about utilizing keywords than being able to take photographs, mine are no different to anyone else's on here, rather my site simply gets more traffic than the average home users website.

When I get time, i will cerate a separate sister site with all my images, but at the moment I don't have time (probably because i spend it all on DPC)

I know I've said this before, but jonpink has a point... If you're going to spend all that time and effort throwing tons of pics up for a measly $0.20 per download, why not spend some time actually trying to sell these images to stock agencies?

With Shutterstock and their ilk, you've got to post a really popular photo to make any money off of it (or a whole LOT of mediocre photos with low download numbers). If the photo is good enough to be popular there, why not sell it rights-managed or to a royalty-free stock agency and make hundreds or thousands of dollars per use?

Of course, if you think your time and photography are worthless, by all means... post on these type of sites. I'll focus on selling individual images for hundreds of dollars "per download".

i have tried to get accepted to rights managed agencies and trust me it is not as easy as it seems. you need to have a massive portfolio of stock photography of fantastically unique and distinctive images.. i know i dont have the qualifications of that sort..
royalty free stock photography is an excellent way of making money with pictures otherwise would stay idle and go to waste. i know people who can make decent living doing this.. i have no doubts about this concept in my mind...

How do you link a website to a word?
01/08/2005 05:13:16 AM · #25
I am sorry, but I don't get it... Are those people buying those photographs business men to advertise their products? And can anyone buy those photos and can do with them what they like? I just can not imagine a business man buying those photos to do an advert if any other business man might take the same photographs and do the same?

Also, could the photographer use his photos for any other purposes, too?

I am sorry if I sound silly, but just don't understand the whole stock photography thing
