Recently updated my website design and content and am looking for specific feedback. If you have time please take a look and let me know what you think. Thanks! (sorry but there is a pop-up, free hosting)

Good:
Loads quickly
Grey on grey color scheme is good
Purdy pictures
Only two pops at the beginning - that's not too bad. If there were more pops in the rest of the site I would leave pretty quick.
Not to my taste:
Purple/blue elements - Just not fond of the color in general, I think it has too much contrast. Plus it makes me think of Pbase.
Some elements don't line up correctly. For example in the flowers section the title is centered under the image but in the people section the are left aligned.
Date and Time display - Doesn't seem like a particularly useful bit of information and creates a cluttered look.
Exif - Some photos have the toggle and some don't. I tend to think it's not necessary at all but in the end if you're going to have it then have it for all photos or none.
Dimmed photos - It's a popular look but I tend to think it makes people less likely to click photos because they look less interesting. However, it is very useful if you use it as a navigational aide. For example photos become dimmed once you've viewed them.
Large negative space - In the thumb views, since they are non-floating, I think you could get by with less space between each element. I would think that if you at least made the space between rows the same as horizontal spaces it would be better.
Consistency - I mentioned it about other elements but I think it's important all around. The bar at the top that has D.B. Hughes Photography is on top everywhere except when viewing a specific image. I would put it there too.
JAlbum - Does the liscense for the software allow you to get rid of the JAlbum link? If so I would go ahead and do that.

First off, Thanks so much for taking the time to look at and critique my site. I really appreciate it. Several of the elements you have described are ones that I already thought of myself and thought about changing, I will definitely change them now. I hated the date/exif, but it came standard with the JAlbum builder, Ill have to edit each html page individually to take them out. Also Ill just need to edit the .css stylesheet to change some colors. Thanks so much for the help :o)
Anyone see anything else out of place or that they dont like?

Dana,
I think you should be able to keep the Exif from appearing in JAlbum by choosing the Advanced tab (I think that's it) and unchecking the Extract Exif Data checkbox at the top of that window.
I looked through it and its clean. Hopefully I'll have more time tonight to look through and give you some feedback.

Your work is good, but the only reason I waited long enough for it to load is because you asked :-) (IE it took a long time to load on my PC).
I pay $14 per month CND for hosting. Dirt cheap and you can probably even find it cheaper. No pop-ups.

You should switch your web-browser to Mozilla-Firefox, available here, not only would you no longer have to deal with pop-up windows, you will also be practicing "Safe Internet", which is kind of important with all the lack of security provided by Internet Explorer...
Back to the point of this thread:
The site loaded up fine, and fast.
I find the site to have a rather pleasing layout, save that everything appears to be slightly more spaced out then they should be. I don't like seeing so much vertical space in between the clicky images that lead to the various sub-pages of your site. Also, from my limited web-page design knowledge, I understand that it is a good design principle to keep the amount of scrolling down a page to a minimum, especially on a page composed of links to other sections of a web-site.
I find the background color and the text color to hold a fine contrast. I would consider removing one of the mentions of your name at the top of the page, perhaps make the larger of the two the permanent fixture with a link to the main page of your site. It's fine sitting on the right-hand side and would be fine sitting at the left-hand side as well.
I would consider providing a few details about your photography, perhaps a link to a simple 'About' page that has a short textual description of your work framed be a few examples. You could also include some potentially common questions that may come your way, like; Are you available for commission work? Do you do Bar/Bat Mitzvahs? What area do you work in, without providing your home address, if this is a home business you are running, or share some of your photography goals.
Just don't fall into the trap of attempting to say to much. Anyway, you are doing a great job with your web-site. |
