John,

Just wanted to congratulate you on your utterly inspired entrepreneurial idea... I just spotted the link in your signature line.

//www.setzler.net/critique_service.htm

Due to your body of work, your forum posts and your erstwhile tutorials your opinions have developed a recognised value here on DPC (and I'm sure, elsewhere too). Very cool idea to make use of that and offer more in depth critiques for a small fee.

Much kudos (and free advertising) to you!
Kavey

And to think I had the nerve to ask for a freebie :)

Expertise in any field is always of value, I think. Hopefully people will see that.

I thought this was tongue-in-cheek when I first saw the signature but hey...where there's a market there's a sale!

If anyone subscribing to John's service is not satisfied with the quality of his critique, I'll provide a better one for $ 100 per photo. :-(

When I was a working pro, we actually made money (decent money) evaluating and critiquing photos/portfolios for shooters wanting the learn how to improve and get into the business. We did it for free at first, but so many people asked for our input that we started charging, because our time was valuable.

Graphic designers do this too.

I have heard that there are pros who do thi son the web as well, althouhg I have never seen a site offering the serfvice, not I have I bothered to seek one out. The remarkable thing about John's "service" is that he'll fo it for so little money...

Yes it's good, also I looked into joining a photography club in my area, run by professionals they offer quite a lot of critiques, seminars and excursions plus lighting tutorials and the chnace to play with their lights etc.

All for around £30 a year!

John: Do you offer critique pre-challenge for possible challenge entries?

That may be handy..

Yall are just tryng to make it hard for all the newbies and fresh budding photographers to get in where the money is. Or your just jealouse one :) thats ok plenty of good photography news and media will tell all the secrets. :)
But anyways cool idea setzler:) You got to pay for the expenses somehow.
