Don't know if it's too early to start this, but I was hoping to get some comments on this photo. I was going to use it for the Waldo challenge, but I thought that the fact that there were two Waldos would not help. I ended up using a completely different photo for the challenge.

This is one of my first real attempts at B&W. I stretched the level equalization quite a lot to get the effect that I wanted. I'm wondering if I went too far.

Any comments appreciated (I'll try to have thick skin! :-)

Thanks,
Gary

Nice waterfall but I wonder why you choose B&W and noise. It makes me wonder what the color version would of looked like. I think your waldo[s] are to small in comparison to the picture, you may have lost points because they [at least for me in the current B&W version] are very hard to see. My eyes had to search the picture to long to find and even when I did they were so small. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks, Scott. I appreciate the input. The color version was actually very gray to begin with. Poor lighting and winter contributed to that. I intentionally chose a high ISO (1600) because I wanted grain in the image -- I thought it would look good. But I'm torn between whether there is too much noise or not. As for the size of the Waldos, you're probably right, but then there'd be no challenge to finding them if they were too big, right :)

This amount of grain is almost guaranteed to do poorly at DPC. It's not a bad image, just not a ribbon winner on this site. Perhaps a reshoot?

A bit too much for me...Can you post the original image or one where the levels are so "stretched" I think the image is much better than it appears to me here.

Yeah, I've only just joined a little while ago, but I've not seen anything that grainy here. I'm very much a novice, and I'm enjoying playing with different ideas. Guess it was a good idea to make this one an outake.

This is powerful! I really like it. Too bad you (eqsite) didn't keep it for Waldo, but who cares - it's a great image!!

Played a little bit in PSP8 and Neat image...
I know you were going for the harsher look, however this has a little softer feel

OK, so now I stand in awe before you. Please share what you did to get this!

Very different than what I was going for, but I do like it. Was this just mostly noise reduction?

1. I ran it through Net Image to take out some of the noise.
2. I Opened in PS and adjusted the levels, contrast, and color.
3. Then I went to Hue/Saturation and did a slight master saturation.
4. Then I created a duplicate layer for contrast mask and flattened image.
5. Added a 5 point black border [inside].
That’s all – but by doing the duplicate layer in contrast mask it would not of qualified for a basic editing challenge.

Glad you liked it. I thank you for the comment.

EDIT: I see some hidden faces in there that would of been great for the 'hidden faces' challenge.

While the grainy B&W is good (I like B&W), this edited version is print worthy!

Ok, I'm going to have to figure out what all that means, but I think I can do that. I'm not using Photoshop, but perhaps it's time to invest. Can PS Elements do all of that or does it require CS?

Thanks. Obviously I can't really take any credit for Scott's version. I never would have thought to take it in that direction. This is definitely educational and I'm glad I posted it.

In PSP8 did a fade correction and slightly darkened. converted to B&W and then cleaned up using Neat Image.

I use PS7 and Net Image on the side [not as a plug-in].

Thanks, Shawn. This definitely adds a nice feel to the image. So many options!
