It's been a while since I had a 10D (which numbers the same way as the Digital Rebel), but I'll try to explain how at least I remember it working...
I think the numbering format is ZYY_YYXX, and the camera would typically start at 100_0000.
After 100 shutter actuations, the count would be 100_0099, and the next shot would be numbered 101_0100, and continue to 101_0199, after which it jumps to 102_0200, etc.
So the "Z" number minus 1, is the equivalent to 10,000 (100 * 100) shutter actuations. YY is equivalent to 100 shutter actuations (since it increments every 100 pictures), and XX are indivudal actuations.
Assuming your file numbering was never reset or otherwise altered, it would appear that you have (2-1)*10000 + 41*100 + 74 = 14174 shutter actuations so far.
Again, this is just how I remember it; if somebody else has more information feel free to post corrected info.
Personally, I use Downloader Pro and let it assign a continuous, more logical numbering system to my downloaded photos. I also have it automatically store downloaded pictures into a date-based folder hierarchy. Downloader Pro also avoids having to deal with all the silly folders that the 10D/DRebel create every 100 pictures...
