Well actually I don't know if it's my computer to blame. But it's sure ruined my day and cost me a fortune in the process.

Since late last night I've been having this problem getting through to certain websites - dpc was one of them for a while, but it seems to have come right. South African sites are working fine, but Iâm still struggling with most of the foreign ones I use - particularly all the stock photo sites.

After struggling with it for some time and trying to change settings in case something had gone wrong, I eventually decided I had better phone my service provider. They've been a big help with similar problems in the past.

Well the first few things they told me were things Iâd already tried without success, then the guy suggested creating a new connection to the net and talked me through it. At this stage he said I should try it out and see if it worked, which meant cutting off the call as I only have one phone line. If it didnât work, he told me to call back but be able to connect to the internet if required.

Naturally the thing didnât work and a couple of hours later I was back on the phone using a borrowed cell phone with prepaid time on it.

For close on half an hour he talked me through a few things without success, then put me on hold without telling me why. While on hold, the phone suddenly told me I had one minuteâs airtime left. Just before the minute was up, he came back. I told him my airtime was about to run out, and he replied âthe problem isâ¦â and then the line went dead. All I could do at this stage was try again on the land line, but the service provider wouldnât put me through to the same guy. I was told a few things, including that I should have restarted my computer (which I should have been told about earlier) and then told to try it again.

When I discovered it still wasnât working, I had a brainwave â try my old (Windows 95) computer. Interestingly I had the same sort of problems there, though maybe quite not as bad. Yet the guy Iâd spoken to on the phone had been able to call up iStock without any problems. I donât feel like phoning back because theyâve been less than no help so far. I just wish I knew what was going on.

Does anyone have any ideas?

You've probably already tried this, but...

Clear your cache and delete all cookies
Run spybot and adaware to get rid of any spyware

then try again

It may just be a problem with your service provider. Of course they'll never admit it to you. I suggest that you wait a while and see if it magically clears itself up.

I'm guessing here, but your ISP's IP address range could be getting blocked. I would say that this would only happen with bigger sites that have a professional running the show, but if your fellow subscribers to that ISP are up to no-good (e.g., spamming, fraud, etc.), then all of you might be getting blocked because of a few bad apples. With dial-up, IP addresses aren't leased for long periods like with broadband always-connected setups, so a site would just about have to block the whole range to address any problems of that sort.

I have Propel Accelarator installed on my computer - provided free by service provider. One thing I've noticed in the last couple of days is that when it is enabled, dpc gives me the same problem as the other sites (often all I get on a page is a bit of broken html). When it's disabled dpc is fine, but many foreign sites are pretty useless. But I'm concerned that while I've been trying to sort things out, I've messed up some settings and I don't know which.

And yes, I have deleted cookies.

Can anyone give me some more information about this?

Spybot and adaware are free programs which search for intrusive hijacking software that has been downloaded and installed on your computer without you being aware of them. They can be very intrusive and actually make using the internet impossible.

I have disabled it, and dpc is okay without it, but I'm still having a problem on lots of other foreign sites. Did you also get it from mweb?

Seems you were right. It took 2.5 days, but everything seems to be working fine now. However I'm scared to enable accelerator again in case the problem comes back.
