Since joing dpc I have gained a higher respect of photography and the art, techniques and knowledge needed to be good. I can honestly say to get higher rankings and better myself with photography I would have to do some research into digital photography. Being new to the whole photography world I had no clue to what is actually involved what the various aspects ranging from shooting techniques, lens, lighting not forgetting to mention editing using photoshop. I had to learn the basics to even be able to photograph with some class. So ventured into some books and came across a book by Tom Ang "Digital Photographer handbook". I would like to recommend this book to newbies like myself as it really gives the just of photography from top to bottom. Just browsing it helped me. I goes over different lens, shutter speeds, using photoshop, shooting techniques, ideas and locations, I could keep going.
If anyone else has any solutions for some good books out there please let me know. I would like to increase my knowlegde of photography better.

"Learning to See Creatively" and "Understanding Exposure" are both great books, by Bryan Peterson. You can read about them on amazon.com

Lee Frost has some good books, a good starter is his "A-Z of Creative Photography".
For photographing people the following are really good books.
"Photographing People - portraits/fashion/glamour" by RotoVision. This book shows over 120 photos and then breaks down the lighting and technique for each
"Photoshop CS and the Art of Photographing Women" by Kevin Ames. I've just started reading this book, but I have to say, if you are doing portrait/model photography (and using Photoshop), then this book is a must have.

I just bought The Photoshop CS book for digital photographers by Scott Kelby at amazon. Just got it 3 hrs ago but it seems to be very good and a whole lot of tips.
OK this is maybe not photography book, but I just had to let you know of this book. It's acutally not at all about photography, but how to get the most out of your photographs is PS CS

i dont really have much in the way of technical books--i find that when i have a question, it's just easier to absorb the wisdom of gordon or john setz. :) i do however, have a few lighting books (including the rotovision one that chris mentioned) which are very nice to have handy when preparing for photoshoots--and i received a couple of cool 'tips and tricks' books for christmas--including this surreal digital photography book. they seem pretty cool--i'm sure they will be fun to play with. :) |

I got this one about a month or more ago.
It assumes basic PS knowledge, so does not go into the very basics.
It is an excellent book. I have changed the way I process portrait shots in particularly, for instance, in the fact I will now process a female different to a male. There were some great sharpening techniques that were new to me as well.
