But who wouldn't like you! :D

Lets see 2 weeks and about hmmm, 700,000 photos to go through. (Just kidding I go through them after I take them) I am sure there is not more than a 1000 to look through now :-) I love the challenge, just will have to decide which one to enter.

I was wondering, since people already have the photo ready, why is the submission period 2 weeks long?

Some people have taken tens of thousands of photos this year. We thought it might take them some time to look through them all and narrow them down to the best photo.

I totally agree with you here. Personally I shot about 20.000 photos this year and I can imagine there are people out there on this site who shot about five times that amount so this is going to be hard for some of us. I don´t know if I should post a landscape shot, a portrait, a macro or just whew, there are so many! Mindboggling anyway, glad I have two weeks to decide.

Fortunately though I am in the process of putting up a new website and I decided to post process every shot again before I put them up on the new website so I am hopefully better prepared than most people.

My problem is that I usually don't keep the originals unless I have entered into a challenge with the shot. I have just started doing that, but only within the last few weeks. Oh well.

Frankly, I do okay, but I know there's no way I'll come close to the quality I expect to see in this challenge, so I'm not planning on entering. I think I'll put all my energies into the voting stage, which should be a pleasure.

I am the suck :(

I'm worried.. if you think deciding which picture to submit is tough, voting for this challenge will be a much tougher task :P
01/02/2005 09:15:12 AM · #34
I'm definately looking forward to voting, with maybe 500 photos taken in total worth looking through, I don't think I'll be bothering to submit anything, which is a shame, as this is about the one chance I had to submit something when I got lucky, I'll concentrate on the best in 2005 for next year.

I have a couple photos I want to use, but I don't think I have the original file with the EXIF data... :(
01/03/2005 06:26:24 PM · #36
well, like some, I don't keep originals onced processed. I don't see the need to do that unless it's for specific contracts or for DPC so I don't have them for my top files. :-(

This sucks....

Well my first thought was that my best picture of 2004 is probably Tomboy but a lot of people have seen that image and there would be no anonymity but then I realised that I took that image on a 35mm film camera anyway so it's not eligible in which case I better look for an image from another trip (since my few non holiday related images suck).

:o)

As soon as I saw the challenge I knew what shot I was entering. Sad that in an entire year I have one photo that I think really stands out!! :D Here's hoping it's more difficult to choose a best of 2005, and that by best of 2004 actually gives me a personal best score! If not I will be sorely disappointed. I'm not hoping for a ribbon, I know there will just be too many mind blowing images for that.

Now that I think of it that way, knowing that a lot of folks vote comparatively- based on other images in the challenge- I may be in the toilet once again ;)

Once announced, I knew right away which one I was entering.

I get to enter perhaps the best photograph I have ever taken AND my own personal favorite.
It will now have a home on DPC.

Oh Happy Days!

I predict over 1000 entries, and almost all of them very good and Avg score of over 6.
This will be both fun and time consuming to vote on. My intended entry is good, but not technically perfect since I only had had my camera a few weeks and this was a spur of the moment golden kodak moment and I almost couldn't focus close enough.
I have no idea how it will fare, but I'm fairly sure I'll enter it anyhow. It's possibly not my best pic in 2004 but it's my fav.

imagine getting the Brown in this one... that means that your best picture the entire year was the worst in what will undoubtedly be an enormous challenge.

I'm in agreement with the 'screw anonymity' camp. I'm entering a shot that's been seen by a few people here before, and that's in my portfolio here. I don't care if others have seen it, nor should anyone else. It's about great photos, not surprises.
01/04/2005 02:46:58 AM · #44
This challenge already has 150+ entries with 12 days to go. It's gonna be a firefight.

I'll be curious to see how the voters handle it. There's a tendency here to vote your "personal favorite" high and your "personal least favorite" low, leading to average of all individual votes in the 5 range. But in this challenge, presumably, all images will be "better than average"; will voters recognize this and generate a "higher than average" scale for this challenge? Film at 11. We are setting up our procedures for exit polling as you read this :-)

Another interesting question; DPC, by its very nature, produces a lot of "manufactured", or "artifical" photos. In other words, "studio shots" where every element is rigidly controlled. How many such shots will we see entered in this challenge? Or will this totally "free" challenge see a preponderance of carefully composed, "natural" photographs? Lanscapes, naturally-lit macros, things like that?

Robt.

if you take a moment, you can maintain a wee bit of anonymity by uploading a 'place holder' image and also moving your image from 'portfolio' to 'workshop'. also, if you have your image on dpcPrints, you can simply make it 'not active'. on the other hand, you could just go along with 'screw anonymity'

;-)
