The bokeh challenge got me to thinking of a shot I took on vacation this fall in Northern Maine. Wanted to know which of these crops is better. Feel free to open comment/critique on either and thank you for your time. :-)

The tighter view is better. Largely because of the more visible presence of the wings. A little post-processing to enhance the wing edges would do wonders here.

I definitely like the first one better...it gives more context to the image and allows the dragonfly to...um...breathe.

I prefer the first shot. The 2nd feels a bit claustrophobic to me, owing largely to the pattern/grain of the wood coupled with the texture of the wings. It's just so busy that it makes me want to look away.
The first, by contrast, gives my eye a bit of an escape by letting me explore the pretty green and blue haziness of the sky/tree background. Even so, I think the shot would have been better if the dragonfly had taken his rest on a plain blown stick. Darned uncooperative bug!

You have such great detail in both shots. The closer crop appeals to me because of the excellent detail on those delicate wings. The pattern of the wings against the log, to me, is an interesting visual puzzle to solve. You make it easy with your careful focus. |
