I took this picture of a friend of mine in college. I set up my own studio in my little dorm room by draping white fabric on the wall and floor and moving 3 desk lamps all around until I got the lighting I was looking for. Do you think she has a little Sheryl Crow look to her?

Monterey;

Go to your image and mouse over to see the ID number (in this case 132528). The make your message, and click the rightmost of the 5 icons above the text field. Put the number into the field that pops up and click ok. The thumb will be in the message, and we can click the thumb to see the full-size image.

I think she has more of a Marsha Brady look (that's a compliment) =)

I can see a lot of Sheryl in her mouth. She's lovely. Looks like you softened the skin. Nice shot.

Hey Chris, you got yourself one absolutely beautiful young woman for modeling and I hope you get many more attempts to photograph her and post them on DPC. As far as your image goes, I like the composition a lot, but think you need to clean up the heavy yellow cast. Also, it looks too soft, imo, and maybe to plasticky...did you use noise reduction software?

Great effort, though.

I think she kind of looks like a young Carrie Fisher (Princess Leah from Star Wars).

You have captured the amazingly beautiful freshness and hopefulness of youth in your subject. I don't see anyone else. I just see her. I think that makes the picture even more of a success. She is stunning, and beauty always scores well. What really makes this image transcend, though, is the connection between the subject and the photographer, which, of course, your audience feels. It's called chemistry and it is priceless. Nothing is more boring than an expressionless subject. Nothing is more amazing than a subject communicating across time and space through expression alone. Good for you and your beautiful model.

That is why super models all look so bored and all so much the same, usually. The designers want you to focus on the clothes :) Tabatha King wrote an excellent letter to the editor printed in Newsweek a while ago on the subject.

Thanks guys!

You know I must say...I'm new to DPChallenge and I am blown away by everyone here! The response time on these forums is amazing, and everyone is so supportive and helpful. I started out as a non member for the mechanical challenge, then just last night signed up for the yearly membership.

Thanks so much for everyones advise and remarks. You guys rock!

Yes, I'll post a few more pictures from our photo shoot. It was a blast! Yyou should have seen my dorm room during the shoot. I had to jam all my furniture into our half-kitchen to make room on the floor. I wanted the hair to blow in the wind for a few shots, but had no fan. So after some thinking I asked my roommate to wave a street sign that he somehow obtained back and forth to make some wind! Yes, she is very beautiful and I hope to photograph her more soon.

I did some skin softening and color adjustments...I agree, there is a yellowish hue...but I can fix it! :)

Thanks again guys and gals. You're all great.

Very nice work considering you used desk lamps and your dorm room :)
The model is very pretty :)

I wouldn't say Sheryl Crow, but she definetly has her own beauty. Plus, I don't think SC is all that hot - this girl is hotter.

P.S. I don't think you needed to soften the skin

I like the picture, it is very nice. I've tried many times to set up stuff in my own room, and have never gotten results like this!
Beautiful!

I'm kicking Sheryl out. That girl is gorgeous. And you did a fine job with your primitive studio set up. Light is a tad harsh on her right cheek for my taste but on the whole a fine shot. Very good work Chris.

Thanks for posting more pics...Did you know you could control for color casts by setting the white balance on your camera? If the D70 doesn't have a specific setting for incandescent light, then set it at between 3000k. Or, use the custom white balance if it has it.

Out of the 5 shots you've posted, my favorite is the still the first. But I can see that you are creative with your poses so that should buy you some more interesting shots with her, or any other model. Also, you may want to look into how to obtain softer lighting.

Her face is too red !?

Thanks!

Those pics were actually taken with my dad's Sony-717. My brand new Nikon D-70 was a Christmas gift last week. Still learning it. I am going to try and set up a small business with a buddy of mine. Photography is a passion we both share. Soft lighting is definately something I'll look into. I guess wrapping a paper towel over the lamps probably wasn't the safest thing to do anyway! :)

I think the 717 did a great job for you. Let's see what you can do with that new camera. I have a 717 too, and I love it!

Yea the 717 is a GREAT camera. I definately have a lot fo respect for it. Still getting used to my new D-70 and I love that too! I decided to go for the SLR so I could grow with the camera. We'll see how it does with more portaits when I get back to school. :)

I might could fit her into my harem, if she's willing. :)

Nice photos!
