I know there have been a handful of threads about this, but none lately, and I just wanted to get some feedback on this.
This weekend, I turned over 50,000 clicks on my 300D. Since I save almost everything, I now have produced 6 files named IMG_0010.jpg. I developed a fairly anal workflow for cataloguing my images so that I would never overwrite anything, and so I would be able to find images when I need to. One part of the workflow is to manually rename my files by prepending them with the date they were taken (ie, 123104-IMG_0010.jpg). This weekend, I discovered in PS cs "Batch Rename"...
This is way cool! Then, when I got home, I searched the forums and found all of KarenB's warnings not to do it...
So, I went back and tested. I could not find any changes to file data (image or exif) other than the name being changed.
What I'd like to know is, am I missing something? Is something in fact changing that I am not detecting? I'd like some real-world experience feedback on this, not just what someone assumes might happen...
Thanks,

I always change the whole lot in one go, I have never noticed that it effected the file in any way, but now that you have brought it up, I'd like to know, too |

I know with my FZ20 taken in JPEG using PS7, if I do anything [including rename] to the Original File I loose EXIF but the image stays the same or to my eye the image appears to be the same. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong? or Not?..I would like to know. For now I keep the original and work from a copy.[ie 1002050_copy.jpg]

Skip, One thing that you should do after renaming files or rotating images, etc, is to export the cache. This is done within the file browser. File > Export Cache.
This will add files to your folder of images that will attach "sidecar" data within those images. This is extremely useful when moving or coping files to another hard drive or burning DVD's/CD's.
Hope this helps. |

I am also working from a copy, but if you do need the original file, how do you find it after 10.000 images with only numbercodes on them? Even if you place them in folders stating what date or occasion you took those pictures, there's always one where you know it exists but you can not remember when or at what occasion? I mean how many days in the year do you go to the same location taking different shots like the park? |

I have several directories I work from but for DPC submission photographs I have the following and it makes it easier to find.
DIR> DPC Original Files- I place the original file here if its the one I'm going ot use in a challenge. [ie 100250.jpg]
DIR> DPC Edited Files- I place the full size edited version here. [ie 100250_HumorII.jpg]
DIR> DPC Submission Files- Submission Files reduced to 150k. [ie HumorII.jpg]
Submission files lead me back to edited files and edit files leads me back to original. I know that sounds like a lot but when in PS I "save as edited" and name it then I save the edited for web but do not save changes.

Skip...I also just discovered batch rename. I use ULead PhotoImpactPro. I just went and looked and I still have all of the exif information on the pictures. Maybe this is an occasional problem? Or maybe it is only with PS? |

I haven't seen threads on renaming stuff, so apologies that I'm a little out of the loop. Is there any reason not to import via the XP wizard(other then not having XP) and using it to setup the base name and autoincrement the individual names when you are copying the files?
Also I've found this tool is handy for renaming files. Usually the various Ars people put out useful stuff not fluff.
