OK...so finally, my girlfriend decided to get this MP3 player she has wanted for so long. We buy it and a $15 card to download 15 songs so she can listen to them on her trolley ride to and from work each day.

At first I was sceptical because of what napster was previously like. But then I see this 1800 number on the back of the card and I'm like ok well they must be legit now.

So anyway, we download a song, and apparently, unless you subscribe for $10 a month and pay $1 a song, you can't get the full version even when paying with your prepaid card.

So I tried to call the 1800 number and basically all it is is a recording telling you to visit napster.com for more support...Puh-lease!

Does anyone on here know anywhere to legally and legitimately purchase mp3's other than Napster?

not sure about itune's compatability with other players. musicmatch and rhapsody are options, but i'm not sure if they let you download the song. from what i understand, rhapsody is more like you purchase their service and can listen to anything at any time, but it's all on their servers (unless i misunderstood).

try perusing this

So then how does one go about getting an MP3 from the internet to their mp3 player? I don't really understand it myself. If I have a CD, can I pick a song from the CD and put it on her player?

I get mine from buymusic.com (buy.com) they have been pretty good to me so far.

Media player 10 has built in msn buy songs on-line and musicmatch.com has some pretty good deals as well.

All range from 75 to 99 (except metallica cause they think they are special and try to get a buck ten or more on some of their songs).

I have been downloading and buring cds and filling my mp3 player legally for a couple of years now.

Media player 10 will do it, it keeps track of your licenses as well. Licensing when buying music on-line varies. I grabbed Trans-siberian Orchestra for 7 bucks for one of the albums, Licensing was I could have the album on 3 Computers, 3 mp3 devices and burn 7 CDs.

Generally the mp3 player should have either a usb port, or a unique type of cord where one end fits the player and the other the pc.

While I am not a professor of mp3'dom, I believe it's like a hard drive. Some media devices will have an option to transfer to the player, I would guess you just 'move files to' the player.

Some of them take CF cards, others have predefined hard drives.

As far as putting cd's on it, you would first have to rip the audio using something like audiograbber. Then you would change the Wave format to mp3 then proceed accordingly. Audiograbber is actually free just type 'audiograbber' into a search engine.

Easiset to do is to rip the CDs you have. Then hit up friends, the library...all free. Not particularly kocher/legal, but then we've been doing this with cassettes for 30 years.

Put a mucic CD in you computer - media player will open. It can convert a song to WMA (windows media A_____). If yo have the digital plus for windows ($20 more stores have it) then you can make the real MP3. Elswise you can get freeware ripping software off the net. (search for FreeRip)

Once you have them on the PC in MP3 format you can then copy them to the MP3 player or burn Mp3 CDs (computer data CDs technically). All my cars now have MP3 CD decks in them - ONE CD will hold about 10 albums!!

What to watch out for:
File Format - not everything will play every format - mp3 is the original (most home DVD decks will play this). It has no digital rights management (yo can copy it forever,no concernts).

WMA, ROH, and many others are there to manage digital rights - you need a license to play or copy the file. You also have to have a player for it - from what i understand, Apple's iTunes will only play on iPods or the computer that downloaded them and no place else. Some formats allow 2 or 3 copies to exist and no more. Each download site has their own player and software...and they pretty much don't talk to eachother.

I went thru some of this earlier this year - McDonalds had the free song bit with a value meal purchase. GREAT i thinks...until i learn i can only play the songs on their player on my one computer...

Good luck.

heh thanks. I'm pretty sure the mp3 player said it will play WMA's as well. She is thinking of returning it (we didn't open it yet -- never really got to the point yet where we have a full song on the computer to even think about opening it up to transfer) and getting the iTunes one.

Buy iPod for windows. 20gb is PLENTY. I have about 200 albums and it takes less than 10Gb at 128bps. (near CD quality). WMA supposedly takes less space. I think they go for $249.

THen get a BMW - you can plug it in and it will play thru the car's sound system.

you can get the car in a color to complement your new Rebel. LOL
