Trying out the Vivitar Twin Slaves tonite on a very reflective surface. Know I have some blown highlights here, just wondering what people thought about the shot in general. Appreciate any comments you may have.

Surface is Black Poster/Foam Board.

Nice picture. Here's one I took of my class ring using no flash:

hmm....may have to try shooting on the natural wood to see if I can achieve a similar result.

The thing I like about yours is that the flash really brought out the color of the stone, while mine didnt really show the (green) color.

That was probably a simple matter of angle of approach. There was some great reflection drilled into that little piece of glass when the flash went off. :)

You need to soften the light - with either a lightbox or use white styrofoam reflectors. By playing with the position of the reflectors, you can control the highlight area. Refflect the key light off the reflectors, rather than using it as a direct light. You can also place small black cards to block the light and create patterns in the highlights to add detail and interest.

Try moving the key light further back, also.

Thanx for the tips Swag ) - Yeah I was right on top of it and using the built-in speed light to fire the slaves. I still have the table set up, going to use the 300mm to get me some distance when I reshoot it this weekend and can really take some time to study the light vs settings.

My son just got his class ring. Used a Photogenic flashhead with a small softbox, and held a styrofoam reflector angled over the top left to bring out the lettering and add specular highlights to the stone.
