I haven't used my lens hood for my D70, mainly for logistical reasons. While it is possible to have the cap and hood on at the same time, it pretty much makes it impossible to get the cap on and off if the hood is also on. I like the idea of using the hood pretty much all the time when shooting without the flash, but that would mean a lot of on-ing and off-ing (cap off, hood on, take pics, hood off, cap on). How do you do it? Do you keep your hood handy? I've had mine in my backpack every day that I've had the camera with me, but haven't taken it out once.

I've had my D70 for about 2 weeks now and noticed the same problem. So far I've kept the hood on for the most part and just tried to get used to working with the lens cap with the hood on. But it's definitely not ideal.

which lens are you talking about? the kit lens is pretty easy to have the hood on and remove the lens cap, but the lens hood for the 70-200 2.8 for example is much deeper making it significanly more tricky.

often I leave the hood on turned in the opposite direction (ie. toward the body) and flip it around when needed.

I'm using the kit lens. Just found out that my new 70-210 doesn't have anything for the hood to grab onto!

Keeping the hood turned the other way is a great idea for "storing" it without it taking up space- thanks for that. Taking the cap off seems simple enough, using the squeeze holds in the center of the cap- getting it on straight with the hood on is a bit of a feat ;)

I keep the hood on all the time. After a few weeks practice, you get used to reaching into the pit with two fingers or placing it in with two fingers.

Flipping the hood on the kit lens sux tho, as it defeats fast zooming.

The 18-70 DX lenscap should be a dual system. You can squeeze the outsides of it, but also the inner grabs of the frontside. Putting the cap on and off with the hood on is therefore no problem at all for me, especially since the 18-70 hood is very small. Even with the same cap system but much larger hood of the 70-200 2.8 it is not a problem at all.

The hoods for my 17-35, 24-85 and 50-500 stay on all the time, Even when stored. The hood is placed on "backwards" meaning the scallops are towards the body and placed "forward" when needed. No interference with the lens cap.
