There was something on the news, i didn't catch it all (screaming 4 year old) about the earthquake may have altered the earth's axis or rotation or something....yowsa, that was a biggie if it did that!

Yes you did hear that. They said it [did] alter the earths rotation. It was said on FoxNews and CNN and the Weather Channel. From what I gather I could have caused time to go back or forward a fraction of a second since time is caused by the rotation. I don̢۪t know if that̢۪s a fact or theory. If so can effect weather patterns

At least one reference for it, article on CNN.com.

I doubt if any actual time was lost since the space-time continuum is much larger than any quake that will leave this planet intact. :D I could believe that it upset the calculations used to create our calenders and system of time keeping -- but not time itself. :p

The next thing they will have to worry about is the desiese factor that will definately enter the equasion after a major dissaster like this and I wonder if in fact people visiting will be allowed to leave the island soon or will they have to be vacinated/checked etc..

Truely a world dissaster and I personally have friends there, I have heard from 2 of them but still waiting to hear from the others if they are well or not.. My heart goes out to all concerned.

The numbers are incomprehensible. And lack of fresh water is going to lead to many more deaths from disease.

I have an aunt and uncle in Madras (now Chennai) and am trying to contact them.

Fast work.
I contacted a cousin in northern India and he has just let me know he was able to contact my Aunt and Uncle and they are fine.

I feel quite light hearted with relief and yet aware of the vast number of people who didn't survive and who won't survive the aftermath. It's a strange contradictory feeling and yet I know it's normal to worry first for those we actually know.

This is horrible.

The photo of the father carrying out his lifeless son's body is just haunting. To think how a child that age could so quickly be taken in such a way.

Sad sad sad. And this is just the beginning. There are many regions that haven't been reached yet...not to mention the epidemics and diseases that are bound to happen in the aftermath... :(

3 micro-seconds is what I've heard reported. Not an amount of time that will actually affect anyone in any real way. And yes, that's the effect on the "calendar" time, or the relationship of the earth's rotation relative to the sun. The time-space continuum remains intact and unaffected.

A more "tangible", though still somewhat relative, affect was that the island of (I believe) Sumatra was actually moved 100 feet south of its previvious position.

Just heard a disturbing story that the Thai government didn't issue a warning, fearing it might hurt tourism if the tsunami didn't hit.

CNN just reported that the red cross is estimating that as many people may parish because of decease over the next few day/weeks that did in the tsunami itself.

I would rather not go into all these theories as people I know have lost their lives. But, I can tell that not a single person in my country knew about it and climbed up places to make the best home video ever. There are questions of course, but that doesn't make anything better.
I don't know about the governments knowing about it beforehand, but the people who registered it are saying that they did not raise the alarm and these people are not in the countries that were hit.
