This was a picture I was going to enter into the Mechanical challenge... I decided to go with something else but wondered what people thought of this pic.

Seems pretty blah, frankly. Lighting is way "down", everything is laid out horizontal-like, the drill bit is too close to the bottom edge, the drill chuck and crank are kissing the right edge. It's maybe a good one to have passed on :-)

Nice subject but as bear says very flat linear composition.
If I was to go with something like that (black and white is good here) I might actually have it vertical and in motion. I think it would do alright with the human element in the picture but the focus on the drill. Get a shot of the big gear going around (very slowly and a slow shutter) to get a little blur action going.
To go static like this maybe have it hanging on an old looking tool wall with lighting from a couple of directions, take the shot from below to add angle to the comp.

I wasn't really feeling this photo either... Thank God I went with my instincts and let it go... It's a really cool piece of antique mechanics but I had a hard time finding a way to make it interesting... Hopefully the submission I went with with turn out better... Thanks for the comments. :)

I must thank you for your submission.
I too had the exact piece of equipment in mind, replete with oodles of spider webs and dust, but given the comments you received, I also opted for something else. |
