A lot of DPCers (myself included) submit photos to stock photography sites, but I was wondering if any people here also buy stock images? If so, do you have any favorite stock sites to buy from? I'm just curious which of the sites are the best from the customer's perspective. Thanks!

Just a tiny little bump...

heres what I believe will happen...
I have submitted nearly 100 images to shutterstock...

and watching the downloads this appears to be whats happening.
new recent images submitted that are accepted quickly get downloaded 1 or 2 times within a week or so, then the download rate all but stops. My guess is somewhere built into the system it a "Purchase new images" automated task. where your account gets credited .20 cents hear and there to help promote your excitement in the upload make money scenero.

What I believe is happening is shutterstock is basically getting your image for 40-60 cents each and on rare occasion an image actually gets downloaded for real. I have nearly 100 images accepted into their sysyem and now will sit back and watch the process come to a stall just to test my theory. sitting at $9.20 in sales

well when someone searches on shutterstock, it automatically sorts them from newest uploaded to oldest. So if there's say 9 pages of highways, and someone finds one they semi like on page 1 and yours is on page 9, it isn't going to get downloaded.

I've found the same thing...my new images did extremely well at first, then almost nothing.

If it has to do with new images being displayed on shutterstock first, then their search function is screwy as it should be displayed by priority order of the search words themselves...shouldn't it?

I'd like to hear stock photo buyers' thoughts on this.

Who knows -- I think my account is at like $8 -- which I could probably make easier if I just marketed some prints more.

I agree and disagree, if you have good photo's they keep selling. I have some that just keep turning over where others have stalled. I have not added any photos for about 4 weeks but my photos keep selling.

I now have $29.17 from 159 photos uploaded. Thats not bad when I have done nothing at all for some time. Hell I even sold 2 photos on christmas day and my referers also sold 2.

I think shutterstocks search engine just sucks. they really shold spend a little time re-vamping it to a more intuitive system that doesn't just sort by newest first. I also think they need to be a little bit more picky on which photos they choose.

Both Istock and Shutterstock give me a constant flow of sales. What I found out is the the buyers on Istock are much more picky since the image quality is generaly better there. If you ahve good stock images, they sell.

no offense guys, but the "automated purchase" for new images, sounds like conspiracy theory. i have a few "new" images that have never sold... and then i have some that have started selling right from day one and keep on selling.

i am getting consistant sales on istock, shutterstock, and lately some on dreamstime as well.
they won't make me rich or anything, but it pays a couple bills at least :)

Thanks, everyone, for the search engine feedback. I hadn't thought about Shutterstock's search results having such a potentially negative impact on downloads, and my results seem to reflect this theory as well.

I would still love to hear from anyone who buys from the major stock sites to find out which one(s) they like the best. Thanks!

Does anyone on this site actually purchase stock photos? Anyone?

People that make websites for other people usually look for stock photos for their work.

I would not buy stock images, mostly because most of the shots I can find there I figure if I really wanted or needed it I could probably do myself. Just a thought most folks here (fotogs) are not going to buy those images.

I didn't figure there would be many stock photo customers on DPC, but I thought there might be a few. I used to buy stock photos and clipart all the time when I was in publishing. Well, if anyone has feedback from the customer's perspective, I'd love to hear it. Thanks to everyone else for your comments. :-)
