I was under the impression that a "snapshot" was a picture taken without any set up. Is that a correct assumption? If a person takes background, lighting and other aspects into consideration, then it's not a snapshot, right? |

I guess so. If you are carrying a background and lighting equipment, I guess you are creating what you want rather than a snapshot of what's there. |

I consider a snap shot, one with no consideration for the composition and/or out come of the photo, Usually very deep dof and a bunch of unimportant items all in focus in the shot.
Generally if some planning (thinking)is involved ie. aperture, shutter and ISO the result will be somewhat better than a snap shot.
Crop can make all the difference as well. A dog licking someones face in a living room full of things to me is snap shot-ish, Crop to just the dog licking the face and it becomes a close up.
Then there is a fine line between Snap shot and a Post Card shot...but I won't go into that... =)
Just a few of my thoughts. |

Snapshot = no real thought on composition, rules of third, lighting, etc. Usually static looking picture that has a person or group stand right in front of a landmark. Also known as tourist shots.

Thank you! I just got a comment on my first challenge submission and it rubbed me the wrong way. I've taken plenty of "snapshots" (aka touristy/family shots) in my time, but the ones that I've posted on here, and the one I submitted for the challenge I don't consider snapshots.
I'm pretty good with constructive criticism because I am *not* a professional and I certainly enjoy learning what I can do to make my photographs better, but the comment I got was obviously from an uninformed person so that's why I needed to get a better idea of what the term "snapshot" meant to others :) |

This is the first challenge I've participated in so I'm pretty happy with my very average rating so far :)

I actually expected a lower score since the photo I submitted was a spur of the moment *snapshot* :)
Strange, your previous post claims it WAS a snapshot. Maybe thats a different definition !! |

I've been spending far too much time on here the past few days :P I considered the picture I submitted to be a snapshot at first because I didn't have a proper background (or so I thought), but I *did* put a lot of thought into the background (avoiding clutter and other distractions), lighting, etc. so after perusing other entries I didn't consider mine so snapshotish anymore. *shrugs* I hadn't planned on participating until the night before the challenge closed for voting, then I felt I just had to because I had to start somewhere :)
I'm still very happy with the score I've got so far because for the challenge its not a bad picture. |
