I'm looking to get some additional lighting so I can do portraits for people, and to get used to the setting. I have a Hot shoe promaster 7500DX which would probably be bounced, I was wondering a few things.
1. what is the Guide Number really equal to?
2. what exactly is a watt second, and how many do I need for one person in a normal room light setting.
3. could i use slave flashes that get set off after they see the first flash go off? or is this to be stayed clear of?

I want to start really small, and I want to spend VERY little right now. I was looking at this 45ws optical slave on ebay which is very cheap and AC powered.

Thanks in advance, and Merry Christmas!

Don't have many answers, but I have used a slave for a hot shoe flash and it does work. Depends on your camera - my camera does not pre-flash (pre-flash will set off the slaves) and my camera does not have a PC connection. You can get a hot shoe to PC connector if needed.

I have 2 Quantarray flashes i got on ebay paid $20 each or so. ONe slave trigger was $16. I haven't tried them in a studio yet - i will have to set the camera on manual and play...but this will give me more htan enough light as just the one on the camera can just easily light a 15x18 room.

There is a wireless solution that looks really cool, but runs $250 or so.

you have 2 of the Q shoe flashes? or what? What models, and how do you make them work with the optical trigger? What's that model. Can you show me links to similar items that would work?

I have a QBSZ-370 - Q = quantaray, B = bouce S=swilve Z=zoom. Runs on 4 AA, has 3 power settings and a PC socket. GN is 39-92 depending on setting and use of diffuser or not.

My other is a little 2-AA unit, no swivel or zoom. Has a PC socket and 3 power settings. QB-350A This one is a good step up from the on camera one and is very light and small.

The slave unit i got at my local photo store - ritz has them for $20.

or you can get this little unit
//www.ritzcamera.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&productId=30235

Since i had a flash i went with the first item, and mine is threaded for use on a tripod, and i have an old ambico one sooo...i went that route.

I have been busy with the holidays so i have not done anything other tahn verify it works. so for another $16-20 I can use the on-camera and 2 off camera slaves...total investment for all that is $80 or so.

Check ebay. My Fuji can take up to 400 volts from a flash unit. Your rebel may be limted to 12 v. check this before using the flash unit, or get an isolator (site on the hotshoe between the camera and flash) If i rcall, the 370 is OK, the 350 not.
