I was playing around with PSP9 on this photo.
Did I over do it with the unsharpen and soft focus on the background?
I was surprised at how red his ears and lips are as they don't look that red in real life. The other skin tone in his face looks ok (to me) so why the red in the ears and lips?
Was it the on camera flash?
Thanks for taking the time to post your thought.

Selective sharpening would assist here. As has been said the bright/light areas show a liitle too much, but in other parts it looks ogo |

A little over sharpened yes.
Also, I feel like I'm looking up his nose. |

Crop the bottom a bit to remove the dark part of the carpet - distracting.
I think it would be better if he was looking at the camera or we could see what he was looking at.
the background seems fine, could even be blurred a bit (or darkened) to de-emphasize it
As for the ears and lips...i have no idea. You can mask then off and desat a bit or change hue maybe to make them more natural in appearance.

You shot this with flash, and you're getting "red-eye" on the lips and ears, where the blood vessels are very close to the surface. Your "soft" background isn't a problem. Your extremely bright foreground is, and should be toned down. Possibly soften the hands as well, to help bring the eye back up to the face.

You are not the only one to say so.
Funny how I did not notice that before and now that someone has pointed it out his nose really sticks out everytime I view the photo now, lol.

That makes sense. I was really close. I guess a little to close.
He was looking up at the tv when I took the photo.
Thanks for all the input, it has been very helpful to me.
