Ok, so I picked up a Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens to go with my camera. Now it seems that this size doesn't have filters commonly made for it, so I what do I need/want to be able to mount a filter. A step up ring looks like what I want? I'm assuming it'd be bad to step down? And lastly. is there a preferred size I should step up to if that's the case? Like, is 52 better then 55 or 58 for some reason?
thanks!

That lens has a 52mm filter size, that's pretty common. There should be plenty filters available for it.

The front threads for this lens are 52mm. The closest larger common size for Canon lenses is 58mm. I suggest you buy 58mm filters and a step-up ring.
BTW, you'll also run into this with 72mm and 77mm. Many Canon "L" lenses take 77mm filters, but some third party lenses and at least two Canon lenses (including one L, I believe) take 72mm. Same deal, buy 77mm and step-up ring.
Please note that there is one disadvantage to this. Stepping up may (probably will) make mounting the Canon lens hood impossible.

Oh that's good to know! How do you know what size filter a lens takes? Wild-ass hit or miss guessing?

In majority of the cases the size of thread a lens takes will be printed on the lens itself and even if you do a search on the internet, a lot of sites will tell you the thread size. |

I usually look either at
B&H's product page (specifications tab) at their online store or at Canon USA

your biggest long range lenses can have filter sizes bigger than 80 or more! I think 77 is pretty common for the normal range of lenses, at least for the biggest of them.

I have the same problem. I probably will opt for 52 to 58 step up ring and use my existing filters.

Canon USA, Canon Japan, Canon NL, various shops, etc etc etc etc etc all have that info available. Canon Japan even has an online museum where you can find all info about all their old and new lenses.
Even the old Canon 50 f1.8 has a 52mm filter thread size. Only the 50 f1.4 has a larger one, 58mm.
So there is no 'Wild-ass hit or miss guessing'.
And 52mm is a size for which you can get any UV, PL, CPL, ND or color filter you want in any coating.
