Anyone ever use a teleconverter on the Nikon 80-400 VR? If so, what one and what were the results?

badboy,
i asked about using a tc on this lense when i looked at it in the store. they recommended against it. with a TC you'd probably lose autofocus, and it'd be quite dim in the viewfinder and have a hard time manually focusing...

but anyway, in theory i would imagine that a nikon AF TC should work on it, however difficult it may be. but think of the range you'd get! :)

You mentioned autofocus...

Forgive me for being ignorant, but do teleconverters usually screw up autofocus?

Exactly....it would be 1200mm (35mm equiv). Id really be able to get some great moon shots LOL. I only have 2 other options...a sigma 50-500 or 170-500, or a really expensive telescope lol. I don't want a cheap one!

I think the main AF problem is that (at least on most prosumer Canons) once the lens gets any slower than f5.6, there simply isn't enough light entering the camera for the autofocus sensors to work accurately. Take a look at the limitations for the D70 in this regard, I would imagine it is similar.

If you get a lens that is f2.8 or faster, you could get away with the 2x teleconverter (I know that the Canon 2x teleconverter is very soft, not sure if the Nikon is the same way). If your lens is an f4 or faster, I would recommend you look at the 1.4x teleconverters. And if the lens is slower than f4.0, the AF *might* work or you can always focus manually, it also wouldn't be a bad idea to rent the lens + RC to try out before buying.
