the 580ex uses new ETT-L II - which has distance metering capabilities.

your 10d won't be able to use the ETT-L II - but if you are planning on upgrading to the 20d it might be worth the extra money.

More powerful, lighter and if you upgrade to a 20D yoou can use the sensor size detection feature. But the 550EX is a fantastic full-featured flash. I'm looking for a 2nd one.

I dont plan to go to the 20d , I'm waiting for 1.3 not 1.6, so 550 is the flash then

B&H has a pair of them ( 550ex ) with the st-e2 wireless transmitter for $799. basically you'd get the st-e2 for free ;}

The 24-70 is great for street photography!

Seriously, I had the same decision, and bought the 580. I may not use the TTLII features today, but it's pretty much a certainty that all future bodies will support it, so when I do upgrade I'll get the extra functionality. I'm wanting 1.3 crop as well (well I really want full frame, but people in hell want ice water too) and so I won't upgrade until I know if there will be something in between the 1DmkII and the 20D.
All I can say is, I love the 580. It's very powerful, recycle time is quick, and it doesn't take up a ton of room in my bag (lots less room than my old manual Sunpak 544, LOL).

large local camera store

I'm getting my 580 from here. They're a great store, good service. The 580 is $50 Cheaper than the 550. ($545CND I believe for the 580).
They told me the manufacturers are selling them the new one cheap than the told one, hence the reduced price on the shelves.

I am not an expert on flash photography by any means, but I believe that the 550EX supports ETTL-II as well, at least from what I have read from the following FAQ.
