I live here and still use these books for ideas:

Weekend Driver San Diego

PhotoSecrets San Diego (The best sights and how to photograph them)

I think the hometown of that reknowned photographer BradP is even in one of these books =)

Edit: Did we mention Little Italy? That is where you will find one of our "Decent" Photo gear shops.

I second the Wild Animal Park idea if you want wildlife shots. The wide open spaces let you take shots that look like you were on a safari rather than at the zoo.

The glider port in La Jolla is also very cool. You can catch hang gliders and paragliders jumping off the cliffs or soaring just overhead.
