Thanks for you input and I think the SC fixed up that database problem :p
I also demoted you on the score board :) ur still beating a few

I like the idea of the "Highest-scoring Photographers" cause this is mainly what I want, so I can see who the best are and where they rank - which currently is hard to find
Hall of Fame is a popular idea but im just wondering how exactly it would work and how photos and people would get in there - need to combine all the ideas floating around in this forum. |

I think simply a list of the photographers with the most ribbons would be interesting to scroll through, sort of like the listing of site favorites but expanded a bit. But the concept of the platinum ribbons and the point system is a little over the top to me. |

In sports, you usually have to be retired before you make it to the hall of fame. Will all the hall of fame photographers be required to retire from the challenges? :)

Just to throw in, maybe platinum ribbons hould be awarded to those who place a ribbon in something like a masters challenge.

My two cents: the idea of platinum ribbons does seem a little redundant - as some have suggested, it will really serve as little more than a counting mechanism.
Hall of fame is a potentially great idea (and of course lifetime membership would be a good way of keeping some of the really terrific photographers here around) the problem would be in the choosing of the Halls membership. Sure the idea does seems a little pointless to those already familiar with the photographers here - i think we all have our own ideas about who the best photogs are, and more recognition might seem like making the rich richer. On the other hand however, it would definately be a great way of marketing the site - another means of making the best photogs here more easily accessible to browsers (and thus making them more likely to revisit and, eventually, join) - it is easy to miss the most selected favourite photogs list.
I think the best idea, least controversial and easiest to implement here would be a simple list of the highest scoring photogs on the site (say those with more than ten challenges entered). I know I spent a fair while sifting through profiles to find what the best average was - so such a list could provide a nice supplement to the top favourite photogs list. |

So does 2 reds and 1 yellow = the medium stuff animal or would one have to trade 4 reds and 2 yellow for 2 medium stuff animals to trade up to a large. I'm confused :P
Just like in real life. Spend a lot of money and still not get a prize :(

Explaination of Scoring System Theory
30 points a Blue platinum
20 points a Red platinum
10 points a Yellow platinum
Blue Ribbon = 5 points
Red Ribbon = 3 points
Yellow Ribbon = 1 points
You trade up as soon as u reach 10, 20 or 30 points
u can not have more than 1 Platinum Level at a time until you reach Blue Level as this is the highest ranking, your platinum count starts over
eg ....
10-19 Score
[10] 1 Yellow Platinum
20-29 Score
[20] 1 Red Platinum
30-39 Score
[30] 1 Blue Platinum
40-49 Score
[30] 1 Blue Platinum +
[10] 1 Yellow Patinum
50-59 Score
[30] 1 Blue Platinum +
[20] 1 Red Patinum
60-69 Score
[30*2] 2 Blue Platinum
and so on .....
- At anytime you can trade your ribbons with me and I give u a stuffed animal :)
... you must not however cut the stuff animal up and win another ribbon with it !!!
Not naming any names :(
hope that explains it all, If you math people can see any holes in the point system just point it out for me - cause im not all that good at maths!

I think it would be nice if there where a ranking of photogs by average vote recieved (w/ the requirement of ten or more challenges) and also a ranking of most succesfull I guess, either like an olympic tally (blues- reds- yellows) or using the point system (I would favor this) |

It seems to me that most of the info you want to know is on the lower-left and lower-center areas of this page -- a list of which photographers have been picked most often as favorites seems as valid as adding up points; likewise a gallery of the photos most often selected as favorites seems as valid as comparing scores from different judging populations. |

YIKES! 167 +favs needed to get on the sites top 20? Guess I only need another 8 to tie, and 9 to get listed :-)

You / we don't need any more ribbons - having Yellow, Red and Blue is more than enough and clear to see what they stand for.
One thing that may be of interest would be a yearly or monthly Hall of Fame whereby those users with the top 100 average are listed. This would change every month / quarter or year.

This is a statistical site and I like the idea of knowing who the ribbon winners are. I've asked for this before but.... :-) And I'm not talking about the challenge archives page... it would be interesting to have this classification by members not challenges.
Just another lovely stats page. :-)

edit: Sorry, I spoke too soon without reading the entire thread and I now see that my idea has already been discussed, so please ignore the rest.
I like the idea of a platinum ribbon but not different platinums for each ribbon color. Maybe a better way to award these ribbons would be to apply different values for each color ribbon add them together and then award a platinum when a certain standard met, such as 50
eg. Blue=10; Red=5; Yellow=1
A photographer with 3 blues, 2 reds and 1 yellow ribbons would get
score of 41 and would not get a platinum until another blue or 2
were won.

Tally
The most favourite photographer is close but not an exact representation of the best photographer (also its more of a popularity contest rather than best photographer)
you also have to consider the time difference, BradP is winning lots of ribbons but isn't on the board cause he hasn't been here long enough to have at least 167 people add him as a favourites/ + not everyone likes him cause they think his a ribbon hog - lol
The Score Board would show all ribbon winners and where they stand and rank against each other | also making it alot easier to find the information and winning a ribbon allows you greater exposer/not for just a week :p
Photos
Favourite Photograph is a good representation of the past
The highest rating photographs - as have been discussed in the pass is very hard to get on and is not a very relistic scoreboard as the average vote cast per challenge has changed overtime with the voters getting strickter - so people may take better photos than say:
or
had to use them as examples :p
but still not be on the scoreboard |

So is the score ... it is a measure only of the most popular photo, not the best photo. Since the pool of voters changes every time, a photo which scores 7.85 in one challence may not be as "good" as one which scored 7.23 in a different, tougher pool.
I have no problem with listing various statistical breakdowns by photographer, photo, whatever. I do object to attaching labels like "best" or "hall of fame" purely on the basis of statistical results -- that should be a popularity contest and voted on separately as I described previously.
Just separate the statistics from the labels and everyone should come out OK. |

Actually, thinking about this a bit more, I'd rather see some ribbons and recognition go for other types of contributions. People who win challenges already get ribbons. For example, I nominate Paul (GeneralE) for a recognition award. Besides the little hat, what does he get for all his contributions? I see tributes to winning photographers.
How about to those
- most helpful to others in general. Could have several areas for this.
- most helpful with critiques
- most cheerful, humorous posts (I have to vote for Shannon/Scalvert there)
etc.

ok - im happy with that - thanks for the clarifcation!
now how do we get these ideas to be considered for development? and how do we find out if its on the drawing board? or if it's rejected? |
