Hello... I'm about to bid on a Nikon Nikkor 300mm f/4.0 AF ED lens on eBay, but was wondering if I could throw out a question -- will it work fine on a Nikon D70? I've read reviews and know it's slow on auto focus. I'm okay with that. Just want to make sure the metering will work well on a digital body.
Thanks in advance for your help! |

Yes it is. My co-worker has that lens and its great. I have the G version, its pretty good too, but the G version is not as sharp as the ED |

I've got my D70 on order, I was going to go for a 70-300 but after reading a lot about the problems I'm going for the far superior 70-210, this lens was discontinued in 2000 so you'll have to look to ebay.

it's not so much that the 70-300 has problems, but it's more that it's just not a "pro" quality lense. it wasn't made to be. it's a very inexpensive lense, good for general photography.

I'm assuming you're talking about the 70-300 f/4-5.6 G, if not just ignore this. The way this is stated makes it sound to like you view the shortcomings of this lens as no big deal other than something like a cheaper plastic construction. I think its issues go deeper.
The build quaility is an issue to be certain; It has that "ready to shatter" type of plastic construction, and when extended it can be noticably jiggled. If optical alignment is an extremely precise thing, this can't be good. I don't have a hangup on magnesium alloy construction, but this really feels cheap (I own one, so I've really spent some time with it.)
In addition, the autofocus is lethargic and intoxicated with completely unpredictable ability to resolve edges. There are no shortage of technical issues with image quality either. Since Nikon doesn't even make this lens, it's not a huge surprise that it's not up to the usualy Nikkor standards. I'm not a pro by any stretch, but the difference in usability difference between the 18-70 DX and the 70-300G is not to be underestimated.

The AF EDIF 300mm f4 is a great lens. Yes, it has slower AF than the current AF-S 300 f4, but it can be found much less$$ on the used market. At least for my needs fast Af is a non-issue.
The lens (old) is also one of the few lenses that doesn't loose much sharpness when using a teleconverter. With the TC-14 it becomes a very sharp 420mm f5.6 (630mm f5.6 equivelent on your D70). It is all metal so with care it should last a lifetime.
The only negative for me is the 82mm front & 39mm drop in rear filters. The new lens has 77mm threads making it more compatable with the semi-standard 77mm.

I have this lens, too. I must say that getting a sharp image out of it is not an easy task, especially at the telezoom end. Handheld on anything but a bright day is ruled out. |
