I am now finally committed. I have just placed an order at pixmania.co.uk for a new 20d, 1GB CF card, Canon 28-135 IS USM, Canon IP5000 printer (my old HP is blotchy and wasteful ink-wise) and free camera case! it is guaranteed to be delivered before midday tomorrow. I have already booked the day off in preparation.
woo! so excited! rumbly tummies! i can't believe that the camera on its own cost more than what i paid for my first car 9 years ago. wowser!
I'm already feeling kind of sad for my good, trusty, S50 though. it's a wonderful (if slightly bulky) little camera. and it definitely has a personality - a bit of soul, if you like. some things do, and some don't. Cedric, my S50, had it in spades. it is solidly made (though the sliding door is a bit of a weak spot), has never let me down (keeps perfect date and time, works well with the microdrive card...), seems very helpful in picture taking... and i don't know, when you switch it on it has a "hey ho, let's do some pictures matey" can-do attitude. it very much seems to enjoy being a camera...
i feel i have gotten a few decent shots with it since getting it in november of last year, and i have certainly learned a fair bit. and i felt i was a bit of an ambassador to its particular species, being it's only current regular user on the site. i have spent the last year trying to get the highest scoring S50 shot (i think that's been more of a goal than a blue ribbon), and sadly failed to do so. got 5 of the top 10, but i guess with so few users (and those who used to use it have already upgraded to pastures new) it's not that much an achievement.
I will still use the S50 though, probably more than it's new big daddy. afterall, it (just) fits in my pocket, and on work days it'll be so much more practical to have Cedric with me instead of lugging a huge dSLR and lens on the offchance i see something to shoot...
will it be weird having to use a view finder to shoot now? i'm kind of excited about it though - on saturday i was playing with a traditional very cheap film SLR in Boots the Chemist, and the whole thing of seeing EXACTLY what the lens does... yum! i felt my skill in terms of composition and focus go up ten fold there and then. i think the whole concept of an SLR lens is that it makes you feel more involved with the shoot. looking at an LCD screen makes you more a passenger, rather than the pilot, if that makes sense. i generally cautiously agree with the sentiment that an upgrade in equipment doesn't necessarily make you a good photographer, but i think it does make you a better photographer. i'm looking forward to trying this theory out.
just 29.5 hours to go. woo hoo!

Well done David, I know how you feel :)
I was going to order from pixmania here is Switzerland, but when news broke of the scam that they are taking everyone's money and not delivering the goods I decided against it - just kidding! - My D70 has just arrived and I can't wait for my day to finish :)
Keep smiling :)
