I just got a really nice Tamron SP 24-135mm Macro through ebay. The seller had used it on a 10D, and he said it worked great.

When I put it on my Digital Rebel, I get the "Err 99" message. This means it needs to be rechipped (reprogrammed), right?

My understanding is that Tamron will do it, maybe free. I know Sigma will do it free.

I've seen this term before. What does this mean exactly? Does the lens have an eeprom that's reprogrammed? Why would it work on a 10D and not a rebel?

Yes, send it back. Sounds like the same problem as me. From what I gather, Canon doesn't like these 3rd party lenses taking their business, so they keep changing the cameras slightly so that it "breaks" the 3rd party lenses.

I have this lens and I have no problems with it. Best bet is just call Tamron and see what they say.

The 3rd party lenses do occasionally have problems on newer bodies, since they have reverse-engineered interfaces. If the interface changes, they may not function properly and need to be "rechipped." But, the 300D and 10D are so closely related that it seems unlikely that this is the issue. It still is possible, though. A call to Tamron is in order. Perhaps trying it on a 10D body would also be ov value.

I called Tamron this morning. They said to send it in, and they will test it on a Rebel. If something is wrong, they can recalibrate it. They also said, in extreme cases, I would need to send in my body too, since some cameras can be slightly different, and that the lens would need to be calibrated to my specific camera. Hopefully it won't come to that.
