L Lenses are Canon's best. THey are the best lenses Canon knows how to make; The 70-200mm f/4L and the 17-40mm f/4L are two of the best value for money L lenses you'll ever get, relatively inexpensive and very high pro-quality.

Great combo of a suggestion, though I'll still add the 50mm f/1.8 "just because" :D

the problem with a used camera that's not coming from a "certified" shop, or doesn't have a warranty, is that it's very easy to mess an SLR up bad. the mirror for example, very lightweight, delicate. If something is wrong with some of the easily acessible components, such as the mirror, it can be quite a costly repair.

I agree completely here. I have all these lenses, and they are great! The 17-40 is an AWESOME lens. But there's the $$$...

If your going to buy one lens to start, and need good range, I'd suggest the 28-135 IS from Canon. It is a great all purpose lens for the money. It's not L glass, but I think it's better than many out there, and it's one of the only Canon lenses to cover this wide range.

As for the camera, I agree with the Rebel suggestion. The body might be plastic, but it's a GREAT camera. I still have mine as a backup.

My suggestion is also to buy the Rebel. I love my cam and someday when I buy the 20D I will be keeping my Rebel as a back up camera. From everything I've heard, the Rebel is very similar to the 10D in features, it's lacking only a few and has a plastic body vs. the metal of the 1 series. I have not had any issues with the plastic body.
