Looking for input from those in the know. I'm shopping for a new camera. Moving up to something more creative than what I have now. Have been trying to whittle down the available choices in my price range (sub-$1000), and it looks like things come down to either the Digital Rebel or the Pentax *ist DS.

There are plenty of reviews of the Rebel available to read, so it's not hard to find somebody to point out its limitations. The Pentax is so new that there aren't that many reviews to be found yet. However, the worst criticism I've seen is that the name is poor. EVERYBODY seems to love it.

At this point, I'm leaning towards the Pentax, but I don't want to make a mistake. Anybody here have any input?

TIA

You need to remember that you are also buying into a lens system, the good lenses stay, the bodies get changed and updated,,,

I've just bought an *ist DS body (already had a lens to fit onto it). I haven't really had enough time to play around with it properly, but I'm very impressed so far. I just saw website news page saying it had won the Consumer Digital SLR of the Year award.here

What I will need is a very large-capacity SD card.

i have to re-iterate what doctornick said about the lens system. your body will eventually get replaced, and the lenses and accessories are what you hang on to.
unfortunately i'm not familiar enough with the pentax lineup to really comment on them... but from everything i've heard and read, the *ist Ds is supposed to be a really really good dSLR for the price, and I've always heard that pentax glass is good stuff. I really don't know much about what's available for the pentax in terms of 3rd party though.

Hi guys. Thanks for the input. I've seen the dpreview breakdown already. Also CNET's (I think) review. Hadn't heard about the award.

The lens issue is not a problem for me, since I don't own any yet. Pentax has a great reputation, and the DS apparently accepts a wide range of existing lenses.

I've played with both cameras in the store, and the Pentax menus make more sense to me (relative newbie). Feels more substantial in the hand, too.

I probably won't make my purchase until after the holidays, in part to see if the prices come down a little.

Thanks again. (still open to suggestions)

Sahi pentax has always has good glass, going back quite a ways. Canon, hoever, has GREAT glass, and it has become the camera of choice for professional photographers (supplanting Nikon). This means that if you buy intot he canon system, you are gonna have a HUGE array of very professional lenses from which to choose more or less forever, ON THE USED MARKETPLACE. Canon, for instance, makes a "PC" (perspective correction) lens that functions in the same way as the movements on a view camera. I don't believe Pentax has one. If you want to shoot a lot of architectural or structural stuff, this lens is a must-have.

Canon also has REALLY superior super-long lenses, but they're as expensive as hell. Thus, buying 1-generation-old long glass used is a very desirable option.

I would take a look at the Olympus E-300. Take a jump over here and see what they are all saying about it. //forums.dpreview.com//forums/forum.asp?forum=1022 Best of all it is in your price range too.
