I don't know how many of you are aware, but the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NY) has proposed banning all photography in the NYC Subway system and some commuter railroads they control as well. This of course is being done in the name of "stopping terrorism".
While I am sure that the intentions may be noble, on a practical basis this will do nothing to make anyone safer. So many photos and other info about the system are already available. In addition, any terrorist who really felt compelled to photograph something would do it anyway - with little risk of being caught.
What this leaves is tourists (NYC's second largest industry after Wall St.) being hassled and denied the opportunity to record some great memories and experiences. Even worse is the further slide down the slope of freedom. This reminds me of the old Soviet Union, which I can still remember had all kinds of photo restrictions. Is that the kind of society we want to live in? |

How would a ban on subway photography make it safer? How could a photo in a subway help a terrorist? |

The theory behind this is that the subway is a "soft target", in other words relatively unguarded. That is true. The Madrid train bombings illustrate that trains are vulnerable.
The real question is however, does a photograph make it any more vulnerable? |

I agree with you. We need to stop taking our freedoms away and start treating our enemies like enemies.
We start by keeping our enemies out of our country. During World War II there were no Japanese and German tourists or students here. We need to start applying this thinking to the current crop of hostile countries and cultures. They can hate us from 5,000 miles away |

Alas my fellow DPC'ers...just read the Patriot Act...
That photog ban is small potatoes compared to the freedoms U.S. citizens have already "legally" lost...
We are living in a police state and you have yet to be told of it.
An analysis of and the text of The Patriot Act (should you be suffering from a bout of insomnia or just want to be further angered (pronounced "pissed off)) is found here.
